Never heard that one heard a similar one about him giving Ernie Berwick sly dig when he was getting the better of one of vivs mate, there is some bad shit out there but it doesent mean he wasn’t a legit hard bloke, my dad worked with a doorman who was a big national level bodybuilder who though he could take viv and he himself admitted viv put him away so fast he never stood a chance there many locals can recall the times he was about, he was shot as he wouldn’t allow drugs in the pubs and clubs he looked after

Yates was trying to get Shaw to accept a fight challenge of his and Shaw was dodging him.  Yates decided out of frustration to fight someone that Shaw was friendly with to try to make Shaw take him on.  Yates arrived at the fight location alone by himself.  Viv was there.  During the fight, when Yates was turning the other guy inside out, Viv jumped up there and unloaded punches in the back of Yates head.  dropped yates down to his knee.  He recovered and knocked the guy out.  Went looking for Viv and found him cowering in an office.  Viv kept apologizing over and over and wouldn't look Yates in the eyes.  Yates offered Viv a chance to come back out to the ring and settle things up and Viv begged off.

Was a common theme in some books I read.  Viv wouldn't do anything unless he had a crew nearby.  All those times Duffy went looking for him, Viv would never show his face.  Even when Duffy was kicking the ass of his doormen and hanging out in the bar for several hours waiting for him.

From what was written, the man that Yates fought was someone that Shaw knew and was friendly with.  When the fight went down, there was a crowd gathered at this scrap iron junk car type business.  They went into the main building where a ring had been set up for Yates and this guy to fight.  Viv was one of the people who showed up to watch the fight.  During the course of the fight between Yates and this guy, Viv got involved and sucker punched Yates in the back of the head.

Yate's book is worth a read.  I recommend it over a lot of the other fluff out there.  Lenny's book is good too.  Although he omits the couple of fights that he lost and still proclaims himself undefeated.

Was it definitely viv? I just looked up that Yates fought shaw in 81 and viv would have only been 22 assuming then and I’m assuming this event happened a bit prior?

Yes from what i have read from various people he was a bad bully & a real menace in the bars where he lived. He was apparently a hard man though & could fight in the ring & on the cobbles. I just do not know why people praise the guy though or any of these thugs.

I would recommend Lew Yates Wild Thing, Carlton Leach, there is another book that is basically a collection of stories of various hardmen, it was good.   But have never like anything written by that nipper guy.  dude is too busy trying to build his own rep by including himself with others.  Like Omahoney did.
