The most intensive part of those leg presses was loading of the plates on to the machine.

Lower the back board and bend your knees. Guys are just clueless.  Bet he would have trouble with three wheels per side doing them through a full range of motion.

That's Kimo. A real nice guy, is a contractor and is loaded like hell. I give him a hard time constantly and he just laughs it off. Totally clueless at what a clown everybody thinks he is but seems to really enjoy his time in the gym. Is there six days a week like clockwork rocking to his music and in his own world. He does all his exercises like that. Packs on the weight and does half inch ROM. He's 56 yo and I'm surprised his joints have lasted this long.

He's enjoying his gym time so more power to him.

As long as he's not bothering anybody.

Well, he kind of does bother other people. He hogs all the plates and has broken several of the machines. Here he is on the Hammer shrugs. He's broken the welds on this machine three times but still they let him carry on this way. One machine he broke really pissed me off. It's the Hammer over head pulldown where you take an underhand grip. A more modern version of the one Dorian used in his training video. After it broke the second time they decided not to repair it and it just sat their for almost a year before they finally threw it out.

I'll tell you one thing, Kimo always puts all the plates he uses away in its proper place. Puts it back on the rack in the proper place. I always tell him that's when he gets his real exercise. Putting a dozen 45 lb plates that he gathered all over the gym floor is not an easy feat. I use to be annoyed by him and would make snide comments ("Have you ever done a complete rep ever in your life?") but the way he would just smile and in this case replied, "I just like to get a pump." softened me up a bit and the more I talked to him the more I got to like him. Just a hard-working guy. Built his business from scratch. Puts in a full day at work and just goes to the gym six days a week always at the same time doing the same exercises year after year and enjoying every minute of it.

All the power to him, too bad him breaking your favorite machine!
Does doing quarter reps build tendons and make you strong for a short range of motion?
I read Reg Park used them extensively, he called them dingo squats if İ am not mistaken, his brother in law was also a Mr Universe also worked out using limited range of motion, ofcourse they mostly used full roms.

Jason Huh's whole workout were all partials. Really makes me wonder if full range is optimal.

Partials are a tool but shouldn't be the majority training protocol.  Lets face it. Bodybuilding attracts the insecure.  What better way to build up the ego than by doing partial reps. Load up the leg press and tell everyone you use 900lbs barely bending your knees.  Do half range shoulder presses and brag about using the 120lbs dumbbells. Use the rack to do partial deadlifts with 700lbs when you can't pull 450lbs off the ground. They are liars to the public and most of all to their fragile ego.

You're there to work your muscle and that means doing an exercise in the hardest way possible and not the easiest.  Every gym I go to has these guys strutting after a set thinking everyone is impressed with their strength. There is an old man in my gym that does this. His wife said her husband is the strongest guy in the gym.  Here's an example. In the seated delt press machine he lowers the seat all the way then puts the pin in the lowest plate. He does less than a half rep with the stack.  If he wanted to work his muscles in the hardest manner he should put the seat as high as he could to increase the range of motion. Bet he wouldn't be able to use half the plates for his set.

Don't get me started on pullup liars.

I see, but I would really like to give half reps a try, I never spare my workout time trying that protocol.
I believe it can train your CNS for higher weight and be beneficial for tendons.
BTW I don't think leg press is a good choice for quarter reps,
Partial deadlifts, curls and power rack bench presses seem much more logical choice.
Imagine doing partials with more than 60 percent of your max deadlift, that would definitely effect your core, grip, traps and hams.
Ofcourse it is much easier lie down on leg press and barely move your knees for retards.

It can also lead to injury. Here's an example. Around the late 70's I read how Chuck Sipes the 1959 IFBB Mr. America built his big bench. He started using quarter reps in a power rack. From there he did half reps.  Then 3/4 reps. Then full range bench presses.  I tried it. First used quarter reps for awhile then half reps. My shoulder and pec region were so tight and inflexible that when I got to full range I did go up in weight and beat all my personal records. I also injured my shoulder because of the inflexibility that contributed to being able to bench more weight. Took six months to heal and to this day in my 60's gives me grief. Like I said before. Partials are a training tool in the arsenal but it should never be the primary method to train like so many do.

I see, thanks for sharing your experience, I also don't think my elbows could withstand extra punishment from heavy partials, biceps and core maybe :)

Look how many personal trainers are always telling people to use super slow and controlled movements with perfect form every rep, they look like nothing. Sure, it doesn’t mean you should do half or quarter reps all the time but sometimes you need to work fast and stress the muscle out towards the end of the set.

One thing I'm pretty sure of, Kimo is not there to impress anybody or show off. Although he's very friendly and personable, with his music blasting he's in his own world. Also, when the gym first open back up, they had a time sent aside for "Kapuna Hours". That was reserved for people 55 years older. The gym was completely dead during that time and I loved it. This was the first time Kimo changed his routine. So he could train during that time and have the gym partially to himself. Often it would be just him and me.

They eventually, much to our chagrin, discontinued the Kapuna Hours due to lack of participation.
