Bombardier to end Learjet production, cut 1,600 jobs
Associated Press

Canada’s Bombardier announced Thursday that it will stop production of the Learjet later this year to focus on more profitable planes.

Bill Lear was a pioneer in the aviation industry.  When the Learjet 23 first flew in 1963 it created a whole new class of aircraft.

The rumor is Bombardier was planning this for years and the Learjet 75 Liberty was just a way to speed up the process by fulfilling orders to suppliers and selling the final aircraft at a  discount.

The Learjet 75 was a dated product that couldn't keep up with the likes of the Pilatus PC-24, Cessna CJ3/CJ4, and Embraer Phenom 300E.

Bombardier would have needed to develop an clean sheet aircraft and financially it wasn't worth it.

The wings for the Learjet were taken directly from the Swiss P-16 fighter jet.

Bill Lear invented the 8-track tape system.

That sounds no good because there is a lot of people that will be unemployed because of this, I think. I realize that it is not so difficult to find a job right now when we have such services like https://jooble.org/jobs/Naperville%2C-IL But anyway it is not good.

There was actually a guy years back on the financial board who had a Lear 35.

I'm surprised everyone on here doesn't have one.

It's very telling that Bombardier decided to close Learjet down rather than try to sell it.  There would have been plenty of buyers if they decided to. Even though the Learjet 75 is an old design there was still a market for it.

The aircraft manufacturers are deathly afraid of new companies entering the market creating more competition.  Recently they've seen the entrance of Honda, Embraer, and Pillatus making the bottom of the market incredibly competitive which necessitated Bombardier's departure.

Bombardier's cheapest jet, the Challenger 350, now starts at $26 million.  Time will tell if leaving the bottom end of the market was a good decision.  The learjet 75 was being outsold by four to one by the competitors in it's market.  They were just getting clobbered.

Just as electric and autonomous are about to shake the automotive industry to it's core, they are about to do the same to the aerospace industry.  EVTOL aircraft are going to transform the whole aerospace industry over the next twenty years.  We will see more change in transportation over the next twenty years than we have over the last sixty.  We're just starting to see the tip of the iceberg and the old industry name are getting nervous.  United just purchased 200 EVTOL's.

Yeah, I've got one but don't mention it - too gauche

I rent it out to poorer GetBiggers - it would pay for itself, but the clean-up costs are staggering

One of the weird quirks about the Lear jet is that the fuel was kept in the tip of the wings. You had to half fill one side then go to the other side to balance then you had to start over on the other side. Made linemen fueling the jet crazy. Four trips to fuel the plane.
