California Democrats seem intent on making it clear that the only thing they do efficiently is destroy businesses and innovation.

California is looking to bring down its regulatory might on retail and grocery stores by heavily restricting self-checkout stations. The bill in question would mandate that employees who supervise self-checkout be working for only that reason, meaning that they could not perform any other functions when they are tasked with supervising.

It would also mandate that employees can supervise only two self-checkouts, meaning that if your local Walmart or Target has eight such stations (as mine do), the store would have to have four people working in that station who can do nothing else on the clock other than watch the stations.

It seems to me if one were inclined to steal, it would be easier in the self-checkout, and almost impossible when using the regular checkout with a clerk ringing your items up. The Safeway were I shop has eight self-check stations with just one clerk monitoring them. The Walmart Neighborhood grocery store went exclusively self-checkout. There is no way one store clerk can monitor them. -Never counted them but my guess is there are at least two dozen. I do not know if this would account for 'high retail thefts' but it probably accounts for an increase in them. However, these stores now have fewer employees, which may offset theft losses.

I shopped at Safeway last year in Alameda, CA.  I was amazed at the selection of foods, especially in the deli and prepared food sections.  I saved a lot on restaurant meals.

Anyway, Safeway and other stores make the simple calculation that theft losses cost less than hiring more employees.  This can change at anytime, and so can their hiring.

Although Hilton has not stated their reason for closing this 56-year-old Hilton near Oakland airport, most likely this is because of the high crime rate in the area. The crime rate in Oakland California has been on the rise since the 1960s. It is particularly high on Hegenberger Road near the Airport where other businesses have also decided to close, such as Denny's and In and Out Burger. It’s really gone to shit since.  There were RVs on blocks running generators, various pieces of furniture in the middle of the road, and fires burning in steel drums. 

The hotel where I stayed in 2001 was now surrounded by a high fence, and a guard was on duty at the parking lot entrance 24/7, asking for your room number.

We went to Denny’s for dinner, and the parking lot was almost empty.  We were one of two customers, and the prices were 15-20% higher than here in Riverside County.

Maybe "tanked" is an overstatement. The price of fast food has increased in California by about 10% since the minimum wage increase. The question is how much folks are willing to pay for fast food. All over the U.S. major fast food chains have moved to kiosks instead of cashiers. This means kiosks can reduce labor costs by requiring fewer employees to take orders. However, the graph below indicates otherwise, at least in California.

Interestingly, Walmart is replacing self-checkout with traditional cashiers in some locations because self-checkout has shown to increase shoplifting. The opposite is true for the Walmart neighborhood market where I live which was recently remodeled and went almost exclusively to self-checkout. One thing that is a given is that change is inevitable. Some folks adapt to it, and some do not.

California Senate passes 0 down, 0 payment home 'loans' for illegal immigrants

(The Center Square) - The California Senate passed a contentious bill to allow for undocumented immigrants to use the state’s zero-down, zero-interest home “loans” program despite national backlash following coverage of the bill’s looming passage.

With 23 votes for and 11 votes against — including all nine Republicans and Democratic State Sens. Catherine Blakespear, D-Encinitas, and Dave Min, D-Irvine — the bill narrowly passed the 21 vote majority threshold in the Senate.

California’s Dream for All Shared Appreciation Loans program allows applicants to secure “loans” of up to $150,000 or 20% of the home’s purchase price — or, about what a typical down payment is — with zero down payment on this state “loan,” and no payments. In exchange, the state receives the original loan amount plus 20% of the appreciated gain when the home is refinanced, sold, or transferred.
