Too lazy to read the article right now.  But, if it is as cut and dry as this thread title appears, I have a problem with it.  Leave it to the Democrats to always find ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

The tread title is somewhat misleading in that they are referring to a broad spectrum of merchandise. If this becomes law retailers would be required to remove gendered signage in the toy, childcare, and clothing sections. "We hope to inspire, for example, more girls to get into science and engineering and mathematics, we want to ensure that those periodic tables and dinosaurs are not in the boys’ section,” said Assemblyman Evan Low. “We just want to let kids be kids.” News flash for Assemblyman Low, kids already do this on their own. They don't need help from idiot politicians.

Children will choose the toys they wish to play with, much as they always have. It is the parents who sometimes seek to direct their kids towards certain items for various reasons. Since it is the parents who purchase said items, nothing much will change regardless of how the merchandise is arranged.

My personal opinion is that it is not something government should make law. In this case changing the signage means almost nothing, retailers are still free to arrange boys and girls items separately on different shelves or racks. If enough customers want gender neutral sections for their kids, retailers will respond accordingly. Likewise, if parents prefer gender specific areas, retailers will comply. There's an old saying in business which says, 'The customer is always right'.

I raised two children in California.  They are adults now, both straight (not that it would matter in the least to me).  Never had any issues with them knowing what they were or what they wanted to be, even with a very progressive left x-wife.   Same with many other parents who raised children in California that I know.

So I don't agree that this is an issue.
Times have changed dramatically in the last 10 years. Particularly the last 5. You might feel different if you had an elementary/middle school aged child in the public CA education system.

Stay on point.

Topic:  California would ban boys and girls sections at big retailers under proposed law

Question:  What the fuck is wrong with these people?

Possible discussion points:

1. Agree with law, nothing wrong with these people, and here is why.
2. Disagree with law, something wrong with these people, and here is why.
3. Disagree with law, but nothing wrong with these people, and here is why.
4. Agree with law, but mething wrong with these people, and here is why.

List of things NOT on point:

- right wing dipshits from complaining about anything
- Look at Dr Suess "controversy".
- Private companies that make their own merchandising choices.

Good luck with that.  lol

They were in the thick of it as we lived fairly close to San Francisco.  The idea that this type of thing is confusing to kids really isn't true any more than any other complicated thing they learn about as they grow up.  I have a grandson too who is in elementary school both his Mom and Dad don't have any issues with this type of thing.

Now, I don't disagree with you that the public school system is crap there and has been getting worse.  My grandson goes to a type of charter school which is cool and they can be better than the standard public schools.  I just don't think in the context of explaining and respecting different lifestyles is an issue here.

At what age do you think it's the public school systems responsibility to teach your children about sex?

We have this program called Pono Choices where they teach elementary school kids things like the anus is a genital.  Parents can opt out of the program.  I don't know how they reconcile this stuff with science.

Seriously?  By definition, it's not a genital.

That's overthinking explaining this.

As a parent, I didn't leave it up to the school system.  I knew, just like myself, I would learn much of it before I was educated on it formally.  I was 14 when the school system had students take sex education.  I think that's too late now with all the sex everywhere on TV and the internet.  We learned reproduction more than anything else.

That's like saying anyone with an X and Y chromosome, a penis, and balls is by definition a male.  It should be that simple.  But not in today's world.

Yeah, it's crazy.  Why are things like gender identity a discussion?  Why is there a debate on whether or not a man who identifies as a woman should be able to use a female bathroom?

If you have a penis you are a male PERIOD.   No one is telling these people they can't identify the way they want.  They just can't pretend they don't have a penis.

But that's not enough for them because they feel victimized so they want to burden everyone else by requiring them to see the world as they do.

That's not true freedom.

misleading people is a necessary tool to get  idiots fired up

I saw numerous clips last week of right wing blow holes losing their minds over Dr. Suess and assigning this non-existent "cancellation" to the left.  Not one single host bothered to mention that this was a choice by Dr. Seuss Enterprises, L.P. (which made 30 million dollars last year) and more importantly not a single one bothered to show the actual content in the books that were being discontinued in order to discuss the actual merits of the decision of the copyright holder (Dr. Suess Enterprises).

In the case of this proposed legislation in California the impetus seems to have been a staffer’s 9-year-old daughter, who wanted to know why she had to go into the “boys” aisle to find science-related toys

Given all the other problems we're dealing with I don't see this as a burning issue but humans never seem to miss an opportunity to be offended by each other

Personally I don't give a shit one or the other and I can't believe anyone else really does either

And you never miss an opportunity to engage in TDS or deflect.

It's actually comical considering the volume of your TDS for you to try and make this argument.

I agree.  I think it's a waste of time, money, and effort.  This is over-regulation.  A good parent will inspire their child to pursue whatever endeavor they choose, signage notwithstanding.

Which leads me to the question:  What the fuck is wrong with these people?

At times it seems there are far too many rules and laws, many of which are either not enforced or not practically enforceable. In Oregon, it is illegal to use your cell phone when driving which includes when you are stopped at a traffic light. While I agree that doing this is distracted driving, making it illegal to do doesn't seem to have had much impact on folks, since many still do it. Fortunately 86% of all new vehicles offer Bluetooth as an option. It should be standard in all new vehicles.
