The Germans I know are avid party people. Every event is another excuse for a Fest with free flowing beer. Restrictions on cigarette smoking may be the lowest in the world. Breakfast in Germany is often cold cuts and cheese. Afternoon coffee, much like the British teas are abundant with high fat high sugar deserts. Dinners are hardy and filling. The Germans I know enjoy life to the fullest, be hell with whether it is a healthy one or not.

The Germans I know and am surrounded by are miserable bastards who try and look down their noses at the French because the French "spend all their money on food and having fun and don't care about their houses". They spend lots of time convincing themselves they're better than anyone else but they're secretly envious of the French/Italian ability to enjoy life and the English talent for light small talk.

The Germans in Cologne know how to have a good time though, I'll give you that.

I visited my family in Bavaria often, starting in 1988 when my son got married there. I never stay in a hotel, so I have no idea what they serve for breakfast. Yours and my experiences are likely somewhat different in that you are there for business and I am there visiting family sometimes for as long as a month. Also my family lives is a small village. I imagine if you are there on business you are in one of the major cities.
