Nothing bad to say.

Inspiring to see on old man doing this.

Probably helping to keep him alive.

The oldest man i knew recently died at 96.

Always said the key to long life is to stay active and drink cheap beer.

He never stopped moving, was always working on some project.

I agree. Retirement is not natural. You have to have goals and something to look forward to when you wake up or you will sleep forever sooner.

Great dude. Life is Movement.
You don't stop exercising when you get old, you get old when you stop exercising.

I had some "retirement practice" last 2-weeks (time off), really liked it.

UP - 4 AM
Gym in AM (7 AM or so).
Breakfast
Walk dog - 45 mins
Beach - Nap for an hour in mild sun
Beach walk, one hour out, one hour back.
Light lunch
Fun time w/ wife
Light Dinner
TV for 2 hours of whatever show we're watching
Bed - 7-8 PM

When people say "I wont know what to do w/ myself if I was retired" it blows my mind. Days piss by so fast its scary.
Plenty to do.
Thx to 35 years in 401K with company match, I retire in 5 years at 60... Cant wait  8)

I am also in disbelief when I here someone says they don't know what to do when they retire. If you need a job for entertainment blows my mind. I retired and did nothing for three years. My days were filled with working out and other things. I realized I would do better financially if I had a little part time job. I work Mondays and Tuesdays. The extra money comes in handy for stuff like vacations and the unexpected like needing car tires.  Now my daughter who works in a hospital needs us to watch her two year old and it's exhausting. I got 5 years to pay off my house. When that happens I probably won't work again ever.

x2.  I love my job, but I could easily fill my days with purposeful activities if I had total financial freedom: teaching, learning, reading, travel, philanthropy, managing and upgrading my rental properties, foster parent/adoption, gym, etc and I would never tire of any of these.  When someone says they don’t know what to do with themselves when they retire they are really telling you something about themselves… and it is not flattering.

Bull!  People who need tedious tasks to do for happiness are mentally weak.  Hobbies are much more exciting than work.

That old fella has a helluva physique.  Why do so many old men have great forearm development?

Totally agree. Retirement is a strange concept. A lot of people have no idea what to do after they leave work. An interesting study of  Shell Oil employees showed that people who retired at 55 died sooner than those who retired at 65!

I do not think retirement is a strange concept.  Many people have jobs that they do not like—especially after 20+ years and they look forward to retirement.  Many jobs are not suited for an older person to perform.  A well adjusted person has a work/life balance whether they like their job or not.  What is strange is not knowing what to do with yourself if you don’t have a job to go.  After decades on earth a person should have developed a range of interests and avocations that bring them fulfillment and meaning well outside of their career.  One of the more fundamental avocations is self improvement.  That can mean lots of things from leaning another language to gym and fitness.  All of which are suitable for a retiree.

My life and my career are one and the same. I am a scientist and have been curious about how the world works since I was about 5. Retirement is meaningless.

Good for you.

However, the guy who bolts the fenders on Ford F-150's 8 hours a day may feel differently.

What will you do when they hand you the gold watch at 65?

What I seen is that some people's social life and work life are one and the same.

Once they retire they lose their social life too.  Then they get depressed.

Once a company retires you it's over.  They don't give two beans about you.

And you thought they really cared.  But when you no longer provide value it's sayonara.

If your work for someone else this is more likely to be the case.

You work for yourself so your business is your hobby right?

You enjoy your hobby.  It's a different dynamic than being an employee.

You have employees?  Do they retire at some point?

Because you constantly use your hands?

Grip strength is one of the last things to go and weakening grip is a sign of declining health.

I have had three companies - sold the first two and run the third currently. All three are in tech areas that I like and would be interested in them even if i didn't make money on them.  I  worked for the big players in my early years- GE/IBM/Xerox. One day I decided it wasn't the life for me so I became an entrepreneur.

I have had up to 25 employees. Beyond that the business has to morph into a different form and I didn't want that. I generally keep a company for at most 10 years and then sell it. I like the creation more than the ongoing day to day of running them. So I haven't had any retirees and never will.
