Western Cape update: ‘Third wave’ is now officially over, as the 7 day average of new cases drops below 15% of the peak.
South Africa has a relatively small % of its population vaccinated relative to most developed countries. But it also has far higher seroprevalence levels (ie, those already exposed to Covid). Levels similar to vaccinations in developed countries.
As we’ve reported already, multiple studies show that:
1. Natural infection gives far broader immunity than vaccine-induced immunity – for death, serious illness and mild / asymptomatic illness
2. Vaccine immunity wanes fast – a matter of months – while immunity from natural infection last far longer (T-cells etc) – with some protection likely lasting several years
3. The vaccines show poor efficacy against transmission (see Israel, UK and others)
With its exceptionally high seroprevalence levels, South Africa should be far more resilient to future resurgences than highly vaccinated countries currently are.
That South Africa is on many countries' ‘red list’ is a disgrace. The Delta variant is dominant in every country. Countries in any case demand a negative test to enter. How can an arrival from South Africa with a negative test to (say) the UK, possibly pose a threat to the UK?
Just ‘following the science’?
