I’m 51 and I can honestly say only an increased timeframe for recovery has been a noticeable difference from my earlier years.

I lift, using predominantly compound exercises, three times in every nine-day period.

I’m always entering the gym just barely over the line of “recovered”.

No drugs.

But I lift very heavy, as well.

For instance, my squatting sessions almost always utilize poundage between 365 to 600.

What used to take two days now takes three or four.

Just eat, stay calm and keep the fire lit.

Make sure you get enough sleep. I have trouble with recovery because I go to failure just about  every set and throw in cardio.  I get wired and have trouble sleeping at night.

So many bodybuilders claim they are on HRT after 45 when they are taking more testosterone than any legit doctor would prescribe.

I think it was Dave Draper that said at 55 your best days are behind you.  It would also be foolish to be juicing as you age considering the increased risk for heart attacks, strokes, kidneys and prostate issues.

On thing I would do is to increase cardio to exercise the main muscle your body. Yes, I'm talking about the heart muscle. It will keep you lean and help with recovery unless you are doing too much of both.

Forget about weight used and concentrate on making any weight you use heavier by using a full range of motion and a slow cadence and higher reps. Yes there are plenty of old men power lifting and they look really out of shape. What good is a big total if your grinding your joints down and look like a slob unable to run around the block?

one thing I do well is sleep. 8-9 hours per night. Its a fine line doing too much of both and its one I need to find. I sure like the epsom salt baths for this old body

Yeah, I, too, like epsom salt baths. Also, I always finish the remaining minutes of every shower with the nozzle essentially shooting out ice water. Seems to really help.

You’ll rapidly age and deteriorate in gym activity if you force yourself to believe it’s “all over”.

Unless you are dead, it ain’t over.

That’s what I mean by, keep the fire lit.

Continue to expect to be a badass. Demand it of yourself.

I wont believe its over til I drop dead. I was in a bad place where I did believe it was over, but beat that and am on the road back to being strong again

I’m 61 & need more time to fully recuperate - Eating good clean healthy food mainly & some added Vits & a Good base Vit/Min supplement helps , drink plenty of water, sleep well, stay focused & positive,
I do some cardio work + stretching + Boxing & grappling .
Work Hard & Rest Hard
Good Luck  👊🏻 💪🏻

I take B.D.C. omega 3 and a probiotic and overall eat pretty well, I shovel down the protein, my shit food is McDonalds quarter pounder meal twice a week (dont tell pellius). I drink tons of water, but my downfall is my diet coke addiction. Ive been piddling about with training for a while lately but want to take it to the next gear now. Thanks for the words

no... I guess I've been lucky. Just the dull aches from doing exercises I did my whole life that didn't bother me until 10 years ago

Sounds fine 👍🏻  Nowt wrong with your cheat meals , Diet Coke 🤷🏻‍♂️ Well there are a lot worse thinks to be drinking lots of.  I’d add in  D,, zinc, & the Good Multi vit / min , Chondroitin& Glucosamine .

I’m joint pain free, only limitations I have are Damaged Triceps & Pec on left side. Able to train full bore with what many think are heavy weights + as high intensity as I can.
My occasional training partners are all 20+ years younger & can’t keep up 😂

I put it down to Madness. 😀 🤷🏻‍♂️

Some antioxidants may be a good idea. Reduce excessive inflammation.

Berberine might be good if really out of shape as insulin sensitivity is probably not the best.

Most age related illnesses, diseases and pain come from inflammation, both local and systemic. So natural anti-inflammatories are what you want to look at. Salmon is one of the best because Omega 3 is anti-inflammatory and Salmon also is a good source of protein. Look into other proven natural anti-inflammatories as opposed to NSAID drugs like ibuprofen to control inflammation. Add moderate aerobics also, as it activates anti-inflammatory things like AMPK, a major anti-aging substance in the body.  The other thing that fights aging is reducing refined carbs and sugar. Older age is a good time to lower high glycemic carbs and even lower carbs in general. It's a balancing act as you get older, because inflammation is also what builds muscle as a response to muscle damage from heavy lifting. But focus on natural foods and nutrients that fight inflammation.  Read Jerry Brainum's work on the subject, he has researched bodybuilding and health over 50 more than anyone else.

Simple. Increase the recovery period and lighten the poundages(more for joints). If you needed 4-5 days to recover before maybe you need 6-7 days now.

Replace some of the lifting with cardio instead. Why do you want to be "swole" in your 50's anyways. Your prioritizations should have shifted in life in general

I train hard and intense but with far less volume than I used to and higher reps aka lighter weight.....I also rest very briefly between sets as I almost always have which makes the lighter weight feel heavy as fuck real damn quick.......working 6 days a week but my routines take no time at all to complete.

No pink dumbells just a weights that challenges me to get said higher reps.

Train hard brother !!

Training clean also but will go on TRT oon.......inly 100mgs Test per week,
