Since we are sharing bench stories I have one. About 20 years ago there was a guy working out in pants not even gym equipment. Dude was heavy probably 350lbs thick wrist about 5foot8. He was also like half retarded I spoke to him and he worked as a janitor looked like he was wearing his work clothes. Dude was probably in his 40s as well. Anyway this giant retard was just doing tons of sets of flat benches and was repping 5 plates a side. To be honest based on his build his size and the way he talked (learning disabilities) I bet the guy was natural as well. Retard strength is real

Pull ups and dips are the only true test of lb. for lb. strength between people.  At a certain point of 15 or more strict form dips/pull ups it becomes more about endurance rather than strength, but if you can't do 10 pull ups/dips you shouldn't even be worried about weight lifted unless you are competing in a strength sport.

I'm not sure if I agree with that sentiment. Over the last couple of years I've moved away from weights to more bodyweight and band workouts. I can easily do 20 to 30 pull ups and 25 to 40 dips (range is form dependent) and I've never felt more pathetic training wise in my life.

I'm not some weight training zealot, but you just can't replicate or beat the feeling of weights and being gym strong. Functional strength is imo somewhat overrated.

Functional strength is overrated only once you have it. It's like literacy. The first step in any type of education is being able to read. You are VERY strong, and like I said, over about 15 reps of pull ups/dips, it gets more into endurance and not strength. If you can do 30 strict form pull ups you are in an ELITE place on getbig. So the elite need to start using weight resistance. Weights are like protein supplements, you add them for extra protein you don't get from your diet.  But the vast majority of people don't need protein supplements, nor do they need weight training.

Any "hardcore" gym should have a requirement of 10 strict form pull ups and 10 strict form dips, then you are ready to start adding weight training.

Good point

Here's the thing. Before I started weights I couldn't a single pull up or dip even though I weighed next to nothing. I don't think I could even do 10 push ups. Without weights as a starting point I'd probably have given up on ever doing pull ups and dips.

As for a "hardcore" gym environment, there is probably nothing more impressive than seeing Kai Greene doing pull ups and dips. 300lbs with immaculate form and he does them as a warm up for his weight sessions!

Bodyweight pullups and dips are bodyweight dependent.

You can't compare a guy who weighs 150 with a scrawny lower body to a 300+ dude with big legs and lower body.

In my early 20's I was involved with a sports physiology research project at a local university. At the time I was right in season and as lean as could be- veins everywhere and all that. They hydrostatically weighed me to calculate body fat and I came in at 12%! Way higher than I thought.
20% is actually pretty fit. The average guy out there who doesn't have a beer belly could easily be 25%

What would you guys say the percentage is for the appearance of abs? Not super ripped or anything, just some visible abdominal tone.

Sure you can. You are stating there is some correlation between bodyweight and having a "scrawny" lower body. This connection does not exist. Many bantamweights have great legs.  If your legs get bigger and stronger with bodyweight, so should your upper body. But your pull up ability should not change. Here's generally considered the strongest man of all time, Ed Coan, "finishing" his workout with effortless chin ups which he says he usually does "weighted". It's clear that exercise is not enough resistance for him. Go to 5:37. He had a near 1000lb squat.

How is it not enough weight he is struggling to get 10 and definately not holding and squeezing at the top

The strength of these guys blows me away.

"My back's been bothering me" [as he deadlifts 750 lbs]

Or the ease with which he deadlifts 135, looks like me doing air-squats.

He still doesn't need to add any weight to his pullups based on the set we saw on the video bodyweight is plenty

No, you're incorrect.  A guy who weighs 300 is pulling all that weight.  Has to be much stronger.

A guy who weighs 150 or less is pulling that much less.  Hang 150 lbs. of plates on him and see how he does.

The strength to weight ratio is totally different.

A guy with scrawny legs has an even higher strength to weight ratio for doing pullups.

A guy with no legs won an NCAA wrestling title.  Why?  He had the upper body and strength of a guy 50-60 lbs heavier.

everyone’s body is different two people with same diet, same workout plan with same sleep schedule will not achieve same results because of genetics and other internal factors. So we have to keep experimenting about the diet and kind of exercises that suits our goals https://enrgifitness.com/how-to-pick-your-classes/. Our body and mind is adoptive which means if you do same kind of exercises again and again your body will adopt to those movements and strength so doing same kind of exercises will hit plateau at some point so it is very essential to change the exercises after some time period.
