The early diamond frame bikes were modified to lower the top tube at an angle, allowing women who wore skirts to easily get on. This "mixte" frame has been exclusively associated with women as a result. For commuting a lot of females still prefer that design- I saw lots of women on them in the Netherlands and Germany.

I just remember when I was a kid it was a Big Thing. God help the kid who was spotted on a bicycle of the opposite sex.

Fwiw I don't know what the hell the latin languages are going to do. Every noun has a gender. The no male or female people are going to have a bit of an uphill battle there.
