Right now it may seem like some large tech companies control the internet, think Google, Twitter, Facebook, etc, but the reality is nobody controls the internet and that's what's so great about it.  The barriers right now are based on code (software).  If a descent open source platform comes out to rival any of these big tech companies, look out.  If you look at what happened to Linux, or Android you can see it can happen to other types of software.  The code for an operating system for a computer is far more complected and difficult to write than any of these other platforms, so if it can happen to operating systems, It can happen to any tech platform.

My point is, the internet is about to change very rapidly because it's just a large network of computers that are software based and software can be upgraded in the blink of an eye.  Just look at how fast your Windows or Android software can be upgraded.
