In heavyweight boxing history the two scariest fighters were Sonny Liston and George Foreman. They were Mike Tyson before there ever was a Mike Tyson.

Foreman was awesome but in watching these clips he is a pretty sloppy boxer which explains why Ali could beat him.

Lyle and Frazier must have suffered brain damage in those fights.

Lyle almost beat Foreman. That fight probably showed Ali how to beat Foreman by tiring him out.

Ironat, you're right, Ron Lyle was a scary dude, total badass...I wonder how he'd have matched up against Tyson in his prime

Well that is good to know.

Maybe Lyle learned from Ali?

Do you think Liston and Foreman were scarier than Ernie Shavers?

Young George sparred with Liston and said Liston could consistently make back him up.

It’s interesting how Sonny Liston was so feared and powerful considering he was really that big.

I do.  In terms of getting stared down from across the ring Liston and Foreman were terrifying.  More so than Shavers.  Shavers had ridiculous power but so did George and Sonny and those two guys had knock out power in their jabs.  Also, George and Sonny could both take a shot.  Shavers, no so well.

As a young teenager, Sonny and George were gods to me (gay, I know). I absolutely loved them. Read all the books on them, and had all the available fights on DVD. I remember George saying in his autobiography that Sonny backed him up. Crazy to think that someone could do that to him. I named my first dog after Sonny because he was a huge, wrinkled and misunderstood heavyweight!

When you look at the history of Sonny Liston, he was frozen out of the title picture and wasted years of his prime.  Floyd Patterson never wanted to face him and after being knocked the fuck out twice in the 1st round by Sonny everyone knows why.  Not to take anything away from Ali who is the absolute greatest heavyweight of all time but he fought Sonny when Sonny was past his prime.  Not shot by any stretch, just not the same Sonny from a few years earlier.

Liston's father was a pro-creator...25 children!

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonny_Liston

His father, Tobe Liston, was in his mid 40s when he and his wife, Helen Baskin, who was almost 30 years younger than Tobe, moved to Arkansas from Mississippi in 1916. Helen had one child before she married Tobe, and Tobe had 13 children with his first wife. Tobe and Helen had 12 children together; Sonny was the second youngest child.

Big George had two very successful boxing careers as opposed to most elite boxers one career.

He was a bad muthafucker with tons of power.

I said normally
This is why guys with long arms tend to box, they have a deceptive reach compared to height
Mayweather has an unusually long reach

Foreman's comeback was the most impressive to me.

It would have been interesting to see Riddick Bowe fight some of those big names too.
