How Long Can You Hold Your Breath?
« on: April 18, 2022, 01:39:05 AM »
For me - 1:40.

I've done it three times recently, and went from 1:30 to 1:40. I may have gotten more than that as a kid - but I can't recall the specifics. I'm certain it was around there. I don't recall ever holding my breath for two minutes.

A couple of weeks ago, I was looking into David Blaine's 17 minute breath hold, and I know he uses some special techniques - but that's crazy to me. David Blaine has pushed his body in some ways that blow my mind. He told Joe Rogan that he could get Joe up to 4 minutes just with 20 minutes of training. I'd be curious what those techniques are.

Is breath holding capacity a sign of anything? Just lung capacity? Or does it reflect on heart capacity too?

I must say - for the last 30 seconds leading up to that 1:40, I find it gets pretty uncomfortable. There's probably some mental strategy to beat that - to overcome that desire to breathe is probably a mental thing. Though I have no idea how to get to 4 minutes. It may require hyperventilating before doing it - but I don't know what those techniques are.

Matt, how do you have so much free time?   You rule!

Until I die.

I live off my savings/investments. I didn't even realize this weekend was a long weekend - but I don't ever know it's a long weekend.

I'm not opposed to working - but find me something that meets these criteria [challenge to any Getbigger, or anyone I know until June 1st - and I will work part-time under these circumstances]:

[1] No mask.
[2] No forced vaccines - or pharmaceuticals of ANY kind.
[3] No Woke shit.

^ Non-negotiable!

I'm not working ANYWHERE that crosses those lines.

FUCK that.

Not happening.

As OAK says - choices have consequences! My society setting up those insane terms had the consequence of taking me straight up out of the working world, and I will NEVER compromise on any of those.

To think that the people in our countries that have the most clout and influence literally have no power to speak their minds on any topics.  ;D Oh man...I can't even imagine knowing that I'd lose my job for saying "Boys have a penis, girls have a vagina."

Haha, what absolute sheer stupidity. That's why I pulled myself out of every social hierarchy. I don't give a shit about offending people, and I always speak my mind.

Our system may stop people from saying "offensive" things, but it doesn't stop people from thinking them.

Every time I hear a story of a friend having to do whatever their boss is says, I realize how blessed I am to not have to worry about any of that shit.

Lockdowns took a big toll on me - but I don't think we're going back to them. So hopefully I'll start feeling better, now that I can train at my favourite facility again.

That said - how long can you hold your breath?  ;D

Is 1:40 a good time?

I am a level 1 certified free diver I took the class in Maui. You have to do a 4 minute breath hold to pass level 1. The secret is diaphragmic breathing you have to load your lungs with oxygen first. First you expunge all the air several times get the lungs completely empty then you breath in deep for every minute you plan to hold you want to do about a minute of diaphragmic breathing first. Then when holding your breath keep all the air in and do not move relax you can hold a lot longer than you think. Best to practice in a pool with your head underwater as that will put your body into it's natural dive mode.

You can really get to four minutes doing these techniques?

That sounds incredible to me. By 1:30, I'm already well into feeling like it's too much. It seems shocking that more than double that can be achieved, beyond already clearing being out of a person's comfort zone.

Does just standing completely still add a lot of time? I was probably moving around a little during my attempts.

Daniel Koval the instructer they mention in this article is the same guy i took a class with in Maui

The participants were all exp spearfishermen and surfers so strong awimmers to start but still wceryone was able to a hieve the 4 minute mark by the end of day one in my class of like 5 or 6 people. the deep diaphragmatic breathing prior makes a hige difference

I do this every morning, ~2 min is about my limit

relaxation is key, the body's instinct is to tense up in panic but you can learn to stay loose and maintain breath holds for much longer

I've heard of people doing this and being able to hold their breadth for up to 5-7 minutes, I've met a few of these people over the years, although I've never put their claims to the test. Seems legit based on what the diaphragm/breathing training proposes. Supposedly, the world record for women is 9 minutes and men 11 minutes.

I think I can hold my breath for slightly over 1 minute at most, but I don't spend time doing that for no reason. Last time I went snorkeling, about a summer ago, I did hold my breath for a little over a minute, but found it very difficult to continue past that.

TRUE STORY (might sound retarded to some of you): Around the summer of 1990 (July to be exact) I was at the movie theaters watching Total Recall with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Amazing to think that was 32 years ago, holy fuck. Anyhow, I was watching the movie with some friends and actually enjoying it. Towards the end of the movie there is a scene where Arnold has to press a lever with a handprint on it that allows for ice caps to be melted, which then creates a viable atmosphere that would provide oxygen throughout Mars. Arnold presses this lever and soon thereafter a vacuum is created that sucks him and an average looking Latina into an unoxygenated area within Mars. The gist of this scene is that due to there being no oxygen on the outside areas of Mars, Arnold and his girlfriend would suffocate. One way for them to somewhat counter this phenomenon in theory (not really) is to hold their breaths until oxygen is released throughout the atmosphere. Well, I tried to hold my breath throughout that entire scene and probably made it halfway through it or so.

I once took LSD, I think I held my breath and stopped my heart for 30 minutes..

Although that might not have actually happened due to the effects of the LSD

I used to pinch bitchy women’s nostrils closed just as my load hit the backs of their throats.

many years ago when i was young we would see who could swim underwater [holding breath optional] the furthest. the pool was 30 yards wide, i usually was good for a little more than 1 and a half laps approximately 50 yards then i was gassed. nobody ever made the full 60 yards and lived to tell. a couple had to be pulled due to the Valsalva effect.
