Cortisone Elbow
« on: May 13, 2022, 07:15:52 AM »
Going in for another cortisone shot in the elbow today. Was thinking I would ask for an XRAY and MRI as well to see how much damage is being done? Anyone else have any exp with cortisone shots for golfers elbow (outside of elbow pain) has anyone gotten any surgical corrections or had PRP? Anyone else doing cortisone every couple months?

Cortisone weakens connective tissues which is why it's only administered very infrequently.

Getting a shot every few months is not wise.

Figure out what is irritating your elbow and make adjustments.

Most likely it's some tricep exercise like pushdowns or lying tricep extensions/skullcrushers.

If that's what is irritating then drop those exercises and get your tricep work from pressing.

Solid advice, but I’m eagerly awaiting the response why this is the wrong answer for Bhanks.

Usually, high doses of Winny/Halo tend to dry out the joints.

May want to cut back on the "cutters".

Also, curious to hear Dr. Healy's self diagnosis.

Laying off shit for just a few days won't correct it.  You most likely will have some tendonosis in there.  Xray really isn't indicated for soft tissue injuries.  Unless it is due to a trauma, getting an MRI wouldn't be indicated either.  Treat conservatively with rehab and some anti-inflammatory.

Then again....you know all this and have read Tarpada's paper on it being that you have read every research article for the last 25 years.  Medial epicondylalgia is often the result of overuse of the flexors.  Again, you know this already.

Orthopedic Dr said Xray was perfect no sign of bone or joint degeneration good gap no spurs. Said not to worry about cortisone weakening connective tissue unless we werew doing every month said he has never seen one actually rupture. Said he was trained by guy who invented the release surgery and it was a major surgery I dont need. Said when I get bad pain holding a cup of coffee then time for an MRI but just deal woth some pain from lifting and get cortisone every couple moths from now. Said he had conpetitive martial arts guy who he has been giving cortisone to for years without issue. Anyway I for the cortisone and plan to take weekend offf and train monday. He also said to stretch before lifting. He said could do corrisone 3-4 times a year no problem ans when elbow stopped responding to cortisone then MRI

Carnivore diet and prolonged fasting will heal your joints, any pain really, it's all caused by inflammation, cut the carbs=inflammation gone.

Are you allergic to anything?...Sometimes an allergic reaction (to anything at all) will trigger an inflammation in other parts of the body.

Again....pointless to do an xray.  What would have changed if there was a spur?  Not a fucking thing.  I assume you and the ortho are familiar with Dragoo's thoughts on chondrotoxicity of corticosteroids?

Also...DING DING DING.....taking a weekend off.  Called it!!!!!

Bhanky,

It goes without saying you should stop jerking off with the same arm all the time.

Alternate hands at the very least.

I think getting those shots too frequently can damage your cartilage. You're probably better off figuring out which activity/motion is causing the pain and stopping that. It's probably skull crushers or some tricep exercise. Give it a few weeks off, not a few days off.

Imo know when to back off & heal up, recognize your weaknesses, and train to improve them. If you're reaching for pharmaceutical solutions then you've already chosen not to do this.

Overcoming natural limitations doesn't mean mindlessly redlining until the wheels fall off. It's a plodding, conscious exploration. Fix where you break. Don't just wallpaper over it.

Doctors, like lawyers and accountants, are not necessarily on your side. They're on their own side and they're principally interested in you continuing to pay them. I say get a second and third opinion on long term regular corticosteroid use before you conclude that misgivings are nothing but an urban myth.
