Personally I dont think automatics are necessary.  BUT I acknowledge that my opinion doesn't matter. The Constitution guarantees your right to be well armed AND cites the formation of a militia as a reason for that right.

1. The point of the 2nd amendment is to protect against tyranny and government oppression.

Thats a ridiculous concept in this day and age when you consider the weapons the government has at its disposal would render the citizens almost powerless (tanks, jets, bombs, rockets) an AR15 against a missile?

So whether I want them doesn't matter, whether it makes sense doesn't matter. Its a right . And if that right were to objectively be explored the government should EXPAND our right to bear arms.

2. Further to haggle over what guns should be banned vs. What guns shouldn't be banned is also a ridiculous exercise. The purpose of a gun is to kill. Whether its in self defense, war, hunting. A 22 cal 6 shot revolver will kill just as assuredly as an AR 15. Killing someone with an AR15 is not any worse or better than killing someone with a 22. Murder is murder. And murder is what we're concerned about.

However if someone tries to kill me with a 22 and I have, at my defense, an AR15 I have a better chance of protecting myself and surviving.

So NO. I dont think people should have AR15's but theyre out there. And Id be doing myself and my family a disservice if I didn't take advantage of that right to own one myself.

Also theres a case in Michigan right now where the State is prosecuting a militia for 'training'. The basis of the prosecution is that it's not a militia but a white nationalist  terrorist organization.  Which is pure bullshit. Anytime libs don't like what you're doing they'll call it racist to support their argument. I don't belong to a militia and id never join a militia but it's your right to do so. Tge state of Michigan is prosecuting a militia and calling it white nationalism.

Its a serious threat to constitutionally protected activities. Id pay attention to that case. It has potential to go to the Supreme court. If the militia aspect is ever removed from the 2nd amendment your right to own or cary a firearm will soon folliw.

Fully automatic guns are not sold (legally). An AR is a Semi-Auto, pistols are semi-auto. Most firearms in the MILITARY are automatics. But in answer to your question, no they shouldn’t.

We’re sending billions of dollars of weapons to Ukraine for not just the military to have but civilians as well all the while our own government is fighting to take away our firearms from law abiding citizens and to do away with our Second Amendment

I visited a friend at Trinidad State College in Colorado which has a gunsmithing department...Someone explained the difference.
The difference between semi auto and fully auto is in the "Sear".  A sear is a part of the rifle mechanism...The semi auto have a ridge or a lip that stops the weapon from advancing a new round and firing it automatically.

To change to fully auto, you change the sear...or you can use a file to remove the ridge from a semi auto sear and convert it.

I have never seen one or observed said conversion...But it was assured to me by a teacher there that it can be done.

My impression is that most people feel it's not a completely black or white issue. There are problems with the ideas in the constitution, as you mention how AR-15s are wholly inadequate against government tyranny today. Some even frame it as a human rights issue but they actually support certain restrictions on guns. They just want some type of status quo.

I think the virus issue is a parallel. Some frame it as a human rights issue, the constitution does not allow government to dictate all these restrictions. But if there was a virus with a 50% lethality most people would support government stepping in hard, rights be damned. So it's not black or white, at some points rules don't matter.
