Pay your taxes, but try to find ways to lower your tax exposure via deductions if possible. I know not everyone can do this though. If you are a W-2 employee you are very limited.

It never made sense to me why W-2 employees can't deduct commuting expenses. If you have to drive 20-40 miles back and forth to work and pay for gas and car upkeep how is that taxable income? The government should not be entitled to tax you for your commuting expenses. I don't commute and not W-2 anymore so it does not affect me now. But in the past I did have to commute.

They have computers that do most of the sorting for them. The computer will flag someone that used to pay taxes but now all of a sudden zero taxes. And still alive? What's going on. Then they start looking. Big changes in tax payments will be detected. They don't care so much about auditing low income people because the return is not worth it. This is why they went after a guy like Wesley Snipes. It was a lot of money and they wanted to make an example out of him to scare others so that they could increase their tax revenue. If you make under $50k you probably won't even be worth going after.
