I have over 2500 magazines from the beginning into the 1980s.  I've been slowly scanning them into PDFs.  Plan on putting them into a searchable database at some point.  Here is an example

https://drive.google.com/file/d/16WbjVBSibkqfJzK7lkf8qCGCl3VC3elN/view?usp=sharing.  (12 MB)
Serious question: As a straight man, I looked at muscle mags as something I could aspire to. Do/did you, as a gay man, look upon these magazines in lust?

perhaps as one straight man to another you should also ask gym -rat as he has over four thousand muscle magazines
It was also a question directed to everyone. Are there things?

No.  It was also as something I could aspire to.

Do straight men look at the women with lust?  Back then it was women bodybuilding only.  Then Figure.  Now there is also Bikini.  But in general, being in contest shape is not something most people would lust after.

I have hundreds scanned already, thousands still to go.  Here is another.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LwVYgWEL9n0RDf_NQK2DFiCF8uSbaA35/view?usp=sharing

Takes me about 20 minutes each for these early ones.  As the years go by the mags get longer.

To see all of them, are you willing to sign an NDA and also contribute to the project in some way?  Letting me borrow a mag that I do not have to scan is a great way to contribute.

Yes

I was 18/19 and I worked in a sports shop. There was a female  bodybuilding mag in the staff room. I flicked through it and then felt the need to take it to the bathroom and jerk off. Since that day I haven't once thought about female bodybuilding in a sexual way. It was just from seeing pics in mags that I got a stiffy.

As a kid, the order sort went -

MM2k - nothing worth getting hot and bothered over.

Ironman was ok, especially when they were trying to hardcore themselves.

Musclemag was always A#1 for that type of stuff.

Flex - Very seldom.

Always found Muscle and Fitness rather ho-hum.

MD - This was another that I was indifferent to, even when they went sort of softcore with it, I found it hit or miss.

Kids today have it easy with the internet obviating the need to actually buy a muscle mag. Back in the day you had to do the walk of shame with what looked to everyone, including the person ringing you up, like a gay porno mag.

Did you get WBF - Bodybuilding Lifestyles Magazine?

Or Planet Muscle?

And what of the various incarnations of MD: Muscular-Development-Fitness-Health, All-Natural Muscular Development, Muscular Development from the early 2000s where they had nothing but silicone-stuffed sirens on the covers for a year and a half.

The WBF stuff is before my time, I mostly knew it back then for crossing over into wrestling. Planet Muscle I bought a few times, but it didn't make it to our news stands often. I had a few issues of Pump which was good, it was like MM2K. Our news stands were mostly Weider, Men's Health, Ironman, and every once and a while MM2k or MD. They flipped more to MD when it when to the girl covers.

I remember one of those MuscleMag swimsuit covers got me so embarrassed once. I was buying it and the guy took it for a bit and looked it over. I figure he's just checking the price, then he goes "Nice, you jerky-jerky" as he hands me the mag. I was mortified.

The other embarrassing story was the time my mom picked one of these up for me as a gift while she was running errands -

.

That's not the issue, but that's the title. It may look look like an ordinary bodybuilding mag, but the one I had was mostly guys lifting in their underwear and thongs after a certain point. I didn't have the heart to tell her :).

Since you have clips of M&F covers from the late 80s and early 90s, I thought you might have read some of the WBF's periodicals.

Yep, MuscleMag went too far with their "swimsuit" or "lingerie" issues every single month. Heck, there are some issues (that I bought before I got married) I have to keep packed up in boxes. The ones with girls pouring milkshakes on other girls' booties......UMMMM NO!! Wifey won't dig those. And, now I have my son to consider.

I can only remember twice when anyone had anything snarky to say about my buying a magazine. The first time was some guys were mimicking a woman talking a deep voice, as they were looking at another issue of MuscleMag that I just picked up to guy. But, the cover model was a fitness girl, Monica Brant, with Milos Sarcev. Apparently, to them, even fitness girls were too big for their taste.

The other was the unsolicited opinion of "That's Nasty!", with regards to a cover of IronMan I bough in 2009. The physique in question wasn't the ro-beast Ronnie Coleman or Markus Ruhl or some other mega-sized monster. It was the "classic" body of one Mr. Arnold Schwarzenegger (in his prime and in color).

MM2000 are the only legit old school mags. The original one's with steroid profiles, Duchaine, TC Luoma, before Phillips sold out. Anybody got any decent copies of the original MM 2000?

Like anything, gay people bought the Mags for obvious reasons.
Straight people who enjoy the history of the Iron-Game also collected.

I have antique barbells that can (and do) sell for 5K, I have medals that go back to the Sandow days, lots of Mags, etc.
Im more into 70's/80's Powerlifting, but old-school BB was OK. (70's / 80's).

I collected everything and anything Iron-Game related (within reason of course). Now that Im older and dont want to leave old-iron for my family to deal with, Im selling that stuff off as well.

I guess gays look at muscle-mags for a reason, and those who just like the iron-game have them for other reasons...

Its only gay if you want it to be...

"Sex in the gym. Should you or shouldn't you?"

Fucking hilarious. I bet Vince specifically made sure that was on the cover. "That's good shit, pal."

Bodybuilding magazine purchase stories are the best especially when mom gets involved. "For men only" Brutal!

For all the fellow schmoes out there, I had find the holy grail of bodybuilding books,
There are all the Robert Kennedy's books in archive.org
I took the pain to download individual pages, and it only takes minutes to unite pages into a pdf file in Adobe Acrobat Pro,
Is there a way to upload them for my fellow getbiggers?
Some books I downloaded
Beef It
Built The New Bodybuilding
Best of Joe Weider's
Competitive Bodybuilding
Hardcore Bodybuilding Fred Hatfield
Power: Science of Lifting Fred Hatfield
True Myths Life and Times of Arnold Schwarzenegger
Fantastic Life of Arnold Schwarzenegger
Pumping Iron 2 Women

BTW Mike Mentzer's Heavy Duty can be directly download as pdf
Also MuscleMag's fantastic Arnold Issue can be downloaded as pdf

Other book's can be borrowed on hour basis free of charge, you can download pages on jpeg form.
I have also found the attached lady on the spot  ;D

Serious question: As a straight man, I looked at muscle mags as something I could aspire to. Do/did you, as a gay man, look upon these magazines in lust?

You’ve always been morbidly obese - how can you possibly expect anyone to believe that you “aspired” to look like those in the mags? Honest question - have you ever consistently trained? Do you honestly not see yourself as you truly look? It seems like you and Goodrum dramatically under rate your obesity and lack of muscle and the Hank dude dramatically over estimated his muscle mass.

Ah, yes, the wallet. I bought 2 lbs of Platz supplements today and it took 3 inches off my wallet!
