What are you worried a DeSantis will do?
I want: strong borders with a more streamlined immigration process, lower taxes, less gov't over reach, strong military, education reform, healthcare reform, social programs that actually help people in a bind, no more identity politics, better elder care, being tough on crime, vaccine honesty, etc....
No candidate from either party will give me what I want, but DeSantis will come the closest, IMO.
So I guess you are asking me why I am philosophically more a liberal than a conservative?? DeSantis is clearly a conservative and I believe a strong candidate. My point was I think conservatives, if they want to be successful, need to move on from Trump. The tide is turning in a conservative direction. Take advantage of that. Don’t go with someone that 55% to 60% of Americans can’t stand.
But you seem to be going beyond all that to ask me about my own positions. You will see way more Ls (for liberal) than Cs (for conservative) below, indicating that I veer toward being more liberal than conservative.
C Immigration. It needs to be reformed but LEGAL not ILLEGAL. Liberals have generally lost their way on this issue.
C Law enforcement. Liberals are keeping their heads in the sand regarding the crime problem. Plus we need to support, not undercut our law enforcement personnel.
C and L Foreign policy. I believe in a forceful foreign policy, and that the United States can lead. I often support interventions, even though we sometimes make a mess of it. This does not always map to one political party versus the other.
L Gun rights and gun control. I lean more liberal than conservative on this one but I respect that we have Amendment 2 in our Constitution. But I would not allow teenagers to purchase firearms and I would not allow the sale of assault weapons (as examples). I generally dislike conceal carry and I generally favor additional gun control legislation.
L Racism and related. Liberals have gone way overboard with all the “Woke” stuff. BUT I believe in confronting the fact that there was (and still is) racism in our history, including “systemic” racism. All the hubbub over teaching critical race theory (no one really knows what that is) upsets me because I see it as an outright denial of the warts in our history. History can be taught in a proud, patriotic way without sugar coating over the difficult aspects.
L Health care. I think our health care system in the US is an embarrassment and that Republicans have 100% failed at doing anything about it.
L Income inequality. Call me a little bit socialist if you will. But I believe in more fairness than we exhibit as a society
L Tolerance toward marginalized groups. Don’t wish to see discrimination against gays in the name of freedom of religion. Not scared of transgendered people (there are very few of them). More pro-choice than pro-life on abortion.
LL Climate change. Yes, with the Ukraine circumstances, maybe there is no choice but to open up the spigots and drill and refine. And I recognize the need for the West to be indepedendent. But have we forgotten that we are in the midst of endangering the planet. Badly endangering. We forget at great risk.
DeSantis is very conservative across the board and does not fit with most of my positions above. So now do you see why I would not want a Ron DeSantis presidency? But I am not angry at conservatives as so many here are angry angry angry at their liberal friends, family and neighbors. Both are ideologies that have been present forever and can be respected.
