For those on TRT, get your blood checked
« on: August 04, 2022, 05:53:27 AM »
I have been going to a sports clinic for TRT for the last couple of years.  They do regular blood tests and are always monitoring vitals when I go in.  Recently my labs showed high hemoglobin and blood count.  This is a side effect of TRT.  The side effects from the high hemoglobin were awful.  Leading up to my lab test, I had trouble sleeping.  Always restless.  Would wake up numerous times in the night gasping for air.  Sweating for no reason, felt tired and bloated.  Sure enough my labs came back showing the blood count as high.  The remedy is to remove about a pint of blood.  this totally changed everything.  I could sleep better, no more breathing issues, the tightness in my chest went away and I don't sweat for no reason.

For you guys running TRT on your own, please get labs every six months and make sure you're doing okay.

Look into donating power reds to really bring it down. I think it brought my hematocrit down 6 points vs. 3 points for a normal pint of blood. My trigger knowing to donate is getting flushed after a shower and legs itchy and tingling. Pretty bizarre but it has something to do with excessive red blood cells and histamine. You just want to keep an eye on your ferritin when donating a few times a year.

Yup, heed this, and Henda's warning. Always do bloods 2 to 3 times a year IMO.
And don't counter-act sides with another drug, lower the dose and go from there.
I never understood that school of thought.

"I'm getting sides from doing a compound, I better take another compound to deal with those sides".
(While possibly introducing more sides from this new compound).

Great reminder and I couldn’t agree more. I do labs 4x a year some things I check every time and a CBC is one of them.

No TRT here, but I'll confess that with what feels like a lot of heart issues bubbling round the sport, over the last few months I've considered going for a plaque scan (not the right name, I know) or even a full cardio-diagnostic...

Anyone do that and get any surprises..?  Am I being a wuss..?  (I mean, I know I am, but  ;D)

How do you do it in the UK? On the NHS website it says they don't allow it if you take test/roids.

This.

But in the States, as far as I know, when you go on TRT your doc will give you a Rx for phlebotomy.   So they can't say no.

A good trt clinic will catch that right away and the doctor will tell you to donate, there's other things to do to help as well, omega 3s will thin out the blood eat a piece of salmon every few days, take a baby aspirin before bed, these little things will make a world of difference.

That's what mine did.  I wanted to make sure the guys here running their own TRT or in a clinic with shitty doctors to key an eye on their labs and do them regularly

You're probably talking about a calcium score. If it is high you'll be recommended a baby aspirin and a statin. If you don't want to take both or either then getting the score might not be as useful to you as doing the full workup with an echocardiogram and a stress test.

I get blood work done every 3-4 months.

Donate blood when i can.

I know a guy who used to bleed himself regularly.

Not sure i'd want to do that.

You are always going to have high numbers on Test, that's what it does. But i've noticed on REAL TRT i don't have a problem. Once i go over 200mg per week things change.

Just need to manage it.

I'm shooting 50mg every 4 days right now and my last blood test was almost perfect.

Regular lab work is good advice for anyone on TRT. How's your hematocrit? Mine has been at the high end of normal in the past. Giving blood brought it down. I've read about other ways to keep it within range such as drinking plenty of fluids including grapefruit juice.
