What would a dead body look like after being buried for 5 years?

W Curtis Willie

That would depend on a number of issues. Is the casket sealed or not. What is the average temperature of the ground 2 feet down. Is the soil really rocky, or somewhat clay? How deep is the burial? all of these factors and more decide what a body would look like.

Was the body fully embalmed, or just basic embalming to hold it til burial? A fully embalmed body will last many years longer than basic embalming which just preserves the body til burial.

Mausoleum burials vs in ground. If a mausoleum has the proper refrigeration and good airflow, and if the casket is not sealed, or propped open a bit, the body will dehydrate and turn into a mummy. At about 1 year it will look the same as it does for the next hundred years. If a mausoleum does not have proper systems, or the casket is sealed, You have about 1 year (two years max) and the body will liquify, gasses will build up, and the casket explodes. (Sorry to have to tell you this)

burials that are at least 3 1/2 feet of earth on top seal most of the air out, and a sealer casket makes little difference in preserving a body. Vaults are not to protect the body, they are to prevent the ground caving in and creating sunken graves. If you are in an area where below ground temperature is below 55 degrees, the body will look fairly good at 5 to 20 years. You get some minor decay, but not much. You also get some mold, but overall nothing really bad. What you do get, however, is serious discoloration.

Burials in desert areas (Southern Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, etc), the body tends to dry out and mummify due to lack of water, and the soil pulls water from the burial.

i never heard of basic embalming or an unsealed casket

why would they not do a full embalming or seal the casket?

Mourners traumatised after corpse explodes

No amount of air freshener could hide the stench of death. In the heat of late January, a corpse exploded in a crypt at Preston mausoleum in Melbourne's north, oozing fluids through an inadequate seal and down the granite faces of the vaults below.

Despite a clean-up, the smell persisted, made all the more unpleasant for visitors by the swarms of summer insects drawn to it.

''It was foul,'' says Angela Costello*, who was at the Mediterranean-style mausoleum days later to help choose a burial vault for a deceased family member. ''I'll never forget it.''

Complaints were lodged with state authorities and Darebin Council. Cemetery management has confirmed another incident of leakage from a separate crypt in recent weeks.

Such incidents are disturbing enough in themselves but they have also drawn community attention to bigger problems with the design, construction and fitout of the third and final phase of the southern hemisphere's largest mausoleum.

Concerns about the project - and a string of other issues around management of cemeteries in Melbourne's northern and western suburbs - have also been raised with Fairfax Media by a group of current and former employees of the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust.

In the case of the Preston mausoleum, management is grappling with a headache inherited in 2010, when the Brumby government replaced a string of local authorities, including the Preston Cemetery Trust, with two mega-trusts charged with managing cemeteries in the city's north and south.

Cemetery management acknowledges shortcomings with some crypts and their preparation by contractors in the third stage of the sprawling Bundoora complex, developed in recognition of the burial traditions of local families of southern European background, Italians in particular.
