Haiti is in a worse phase than ever, which is sad. What is interesting is that, despite long-term resistance to “external occupation”, many in Haiti are begging, “please come back in and help restore order”. But they are adding, “please have it be troops from just the US and maybe Mexico. We don’t really want any of those UN troops from far away places.” Interesting who gets turned to when the chips are down. Many US missionaries still help in Haiti too (not sure if they still can get in and out of where they are helping and whether their churches are still arranging missions).

They helped put that rap singer in as President but he did not turn out any better than the rest of them. Before him, Aristide was the peoples’ big hope but he came to depend on drug runners, if not directly involved himself. Hard to figure out what can work. What is weird is the best semi-recent times in Haiti were probably during Baby Doc, even though he milked the country dry himself. I visited once when his father Papa Doc was still President and was constantly followed around by secret police. But LOTS of beauty in that country just the same.

Also, classic Franz Fanon type scenario where the post independence elite were as bad as the original colonizers and have milked resources and riches for themselves, still fairly true to this day. Also, a ghetto type gang banger reality has set in within the poorest communities, like a genie let loose from the bottle.

Under the Duvalier dictatorships, the state police terrorized the entire nation, resulting in a semblance of order. Now the state police seem powerless and allow the criminal gangs full control in much of the geography. As a result, the call among some Haitians for US troops to come into the country to help restore order.
