Which do you prefer in this day and age?  Intel or AMD based desktops?

Intel but most of my stuff is 25+ years old.
Today it doesn't matter what you use - processing power is enormous and it's all a blurred mess.

I would like to add Linux or MS Windows 11 as well.  I have a HP Windows 7 since 2005ish which worked great 'til 1-2 months ago, and now won't even turn on.  I also have an Acer with Windows 10 bought about 4 years ago.  Supposedly it has 3X the speed of my no dead almost 20 year old HP.....it is not.  I would put my first computer speed against this pile of shit....it was an E-Machine which I don't think even exist anymore with 3GB of storage.  Lasted about ten years.

This Acer thing has come close many times to a hammer taking it's life, or being thrown off my second floor balcony as hard as I can.  I hate Acer, but I hate Windows 10 even more.  Too much bullshit and kiddie game apps in the background slowing things down.  I'm techie stupid so I removed a lot, but only things I felt comfortable with, and it is still slow as fuck. 

Is Windows 11 any better?  Windows 7 was the best OS they ever made.  They should have stopped there.

I like the fact that Linux is more secure, but you can't use a lot of software on it like Office which is a must have. And I don't know if my two printers will work with it.  Hell, I wouldn't even have a computer need if it wasn't for Excel, Word,  Access database and printers.  Everything else can be done on a phone now, and I could throw this huge ass L-shaped desk off the balcony, and put in more workout equipment or some other shit in this room.

LOL!!  I am still on Windows 8 since 2013 when I got this Dell All In One.  I still use it for processing the photos from my travel gigs and my laptop for everything else.

Sucks to hear Windows 10 is that bad.  No idea why 11 may be any better?

From the beginning Intel dominated the computer chip industry, almost to a monopoly extent.  Intel used to be way way better than AMD.

When AMD spun off their chip building business as Global foundries and started buying chips from TSMC, everything changed.  Suddenly AMD and Intel were on a level playing field. 

The improvements to AMD chips over the last six years have been staggering. 

However, I still prefer Intel.  I'm just glad they don't have the monopoly position they used to have.

Intel 3770k 16 gig ram (still use almost 10 years old)


In my shop I have 6 workstations with Ryzen 5800x



going back 10+ years I had Amd FX series, Phenom X2 and Amd Athlon 4000, also remember a couple Pentium 4 and Celerons



95% of my money is in AMD stock, started buying when it was around $4, average purchase price now is about $40.
AMD will keep gaining marketshare in servers with the Epyc Genoa release



Video cards I've had most ATI/AMD with only 2 Nvidia gpus, fx5800 (I think this was around 2005) and a gtx1080

Windows 10, no plans to switch to 11 any time soon. I have never bought a prebuilt comp so no bloatware. Most of the work software I use wont be ready for windows 11 for a while

What is the need for so much memory.  I only have 16 gigs on this and it does fine for Photoshop.  Of course, I only have PS3.     But I do not do video editing or anything like that.

10ft x 25ft at 150dpi wall mural in photoshop with hundreds of layers will easily use 100gigs, it is an insane amount of pixels

On trips I use a pretty old mid spec laptop to remote access my main comp but I hate small laptop screens. Used to working on 3 32" monitors.

Everything depends on the programs you run.

Having a lot of RAM is always a good idea and it's cheap. I always have at least 64 and never utilize that much. I've been building my own computers for 20 years.

Graphics cards and processors are hardly the limiting factor, unless you are into hardcore gaming.

One of my brothers has a crazy ass PC, everything is liquid cooled. Even playing the most demanding games at the highest settings barely overwhelm the system. It's crazy how advanced graphics are these days.

No games here.  I use Xbox for that.  Really, other than Photoshop CS3 (about 12 years old or more) I don't run any programs like video editing, streaming, etc.

I've gotten away with 16 gigs on Windows 8 so far.

I edit photos and especially large panoramas. If you use plugins you quickly run out of RAM. I have 48 but could easily use 128 Gb of RAM. Every 5 years you have to upgrade even the best computers. Often you have to upgrade several components each time because they are linked.

Exactly.  I used to use NLite for a custom scaled-down windows install...but it's not supported anymore.

Now, I don't know why people go to retail stores for their computers.  Order an off-lease one from amazon.  You can get some hello good ones on there for 90% of the population

Probably but for an average user...its not going to make any difference.  Only thing to do with this one is install office and a few other things.

Interesting.  Normally the ones I see over 16 gig of RAM also have a combo of SSD and HDD drives as well.

I'm looking at the Dell XPS 17" Touchscreen Laptop (i7-12700H/1TB/SSD/16GB RAM/Windows 11) and might buy it this weekend.  Haven't had a new computer in ages, so forgive these simple questions:  Do you guys use a VPN?  Wondering whether I really need to use one ... Also, is Antivirus software still important to have; and if so, which do you recommend?
