I did not watch his announcement which apparently went on and on for over and hour. I read that the networks cut out at about halfway through his loquacious speech, including FOX. What was missing apparently was his future vision, rather he rehashed the past touting and exaggerating his former accomplishments. A lot of people are tired of him. It will be very interesting to see how this goes. As devastated as he gets when he loses, I wonder how he will deal with yet another loss.

Will Trump's core supporters be enough to get him in? Winning an election is all about numbers. Passion alone won't go far. And, what if the Republican Party doesn't nominate him after the primaries? This just might push him over the edge.

I am a Democrat, but I completely agree that DeSantis can win semi-moderates/so-so conservatives, especially in the Midwest, which Trump cannot. Plus people don’t know DeSantis that well yet (except in Florida) so he will have the opportunity to redefine himself somewhat into a more moderate type (possibly). Trump is way too damaged goods for perceptions to change, plus he is absolutely incapable of changing his personality.

Also agree that too moderate a running mate would be a bad idea for DeSantis. People see through too much change. The authenticity factor. Strongly conservative running mate but with a relatively mild personality.

Indeed they are. The center-right (and center-left) will have the economy, inflation, crime, and energy prices as the mitigating factor.

Simple: that DeSantis has a solid chance of winning in 2024. Why I am a Democrat and differ with DeSantis from the standpoint of tone and policy is a much more complex and detailed discussion. In two words: the only two areas where I am on the conservative side is support for law enforcement (and the need for consequences for crime) and, to some extent, immigration (again an area where rule of law is involved). On almost all other aspects, I am liberal, so obviously DeSantis is a turnoff from a policy perspective. That is not fear, just serious policy disagreement.
