"Our best bet to return heavyweight supremacy to the United States," exclaims U.S. Olympic Weightlifting Coach Bob Hoffman

Gary was reported as being the greatest high school shot putter in New York history by the NEW YORK TIMES. He left countless broken basketball backboards and light fixture through out gymnasiums during the indoor season. He military pressed 300lbs, squatted 500 x5 and 450 x 10 while still a high school student in 1960. He never wore a belt in high school and there were no such things as wraps or sleeves. He went to college at NYU and broke every record but more importantly he brought the sport into the limelight. he was hyped as being the next WORLD STRONGEST MAN in both olympic lifting and the shot put. But it wasn't meant to be his competing in two sports created some imbalance as much of a gift that his enormous strength was it hampered his flexibility and technique. the years of pushing and training with the gas pedal to the floor caught up to Gary in 1963 with a knee and elbow injury's that plagued his Olympic lifting. his progress was up and down although he finished his collegiate career with a 510 lb Bench .385 Steep incline press, 615lb squat and a 385 lb rack press. he made a final run at Olympic fame in 1968 that ended in a wrist injury. He then retired at 25 and assimilated into the working world.

As a weightlifter, Gary Gubner placed third at the 1962 World Championships, and was second in 1965, both in the unlimited class. He was US National Champion in unlimited in 1966. Gubner was also an excellent shot putter and attempted to make the 1964 Olympic team in both track & field and weightlifting, but finished fifth at the U.S. Olympic Trials in the shot put. He had won the 1962 AAU Championship in the shot put, was second ranked on the 1962 world list with 19.78, and won three AAU Indoor titles in 1962-64. In 1962 he set three world indoor records in the shot put, including his personal best of 19.80. As a shot putter Gubner won the 1963-64 NCAA titles, representing New York University (NYU), and was second at the 1962 NCAAs.
