Rusty old Bar

just dragged out an old feather steel Olympic bar out my basement & surprisingly not that much rust on there. Just on a sleeve & itīs definitely "eaten" into the metal causing like fine rough pimples on the bar ( donīt know how to say it any other way)
so i know thereīs a load of videos out there telling you to put it in vinegar...wire brush ..etc but i just sprayed it with WD-40  spray, wiped it & then left a layer of WD-40 on there.
will this be enough?  iīm going to start using the bar again.  still spins good.
Chrome bars are better i think as mine is a black feather steel bar. bought in the 90s.

If it spins OK and plates still slide on it OK, I'm sure that's fine.
I know plenty of folks who are old iron fanatics, and spend more time cleaning and refurbishing them, then actually training w/ them.
They have zero muscle and zero physique. Yet a great iron collection. (Odd  )

Any markings on teh bar as far as who made it? Some of those old bars are great. Yorks, Eleiko's, etc...

no name on it.  Itīs definitely feather steel , black.  well thatīs what they told me, USA Feather steel & it was expensive for a bar back when i bought it. It dosenīt spin fast like some bars iīve seen today & has very deep aggressive knurling on it.

Sounds like a keeper for sure.
Probably a 1500 lb. test bar, in comparison to the cheap Chinese 750 lb. bars that bend.

another thing, itīs got bolts on the ends. I would prefer if it was like the old York Bars.

Yes i was told it was heavy duty for heavy lifts ( take any load iīll lift for sure)
The shaft of the bar is thick

yeah the knurling in the center of the bar digs into my traps/ neck area when wearing a T-shirt on squats.  still...i like the bar.

Dear lord....NEVER use wd-40 on a bar.  Here's just one video on cleaning a bar.

You can knock the rust off pretty well with a green or blue Scotch Brite from any general store. They're about 600 and 1000 grit finishes respectively. #0000 copper or steel wool is good too. WD-40 and 3 in oil is barely ok, but the best oil for most things is clear mineral oil. It protects, but doesn't dry hard like 3 in 1 or WD-40 if the bar gets left for extended periods.

Bar should be fine, I've never seen a bar rust pitted to the point of being dangerous. Most bar breaks are bad drops, or people doing odd things like re-cutting the rings, etc....

Never heard of the mineral oil thing.  This thread reminds me that I need to clean my ohio bar soon.  Also, do some maintenance on my C2 equipment.

WD-40 really doesn't last long as a rust preventative, and it will leave a gummy residue with time. It winds up working as an anti-lubricant.

OK,  yeah like i wrote i have a white oil which i think will be enough to oil it good.
I remember when i first got the bar it was oiled up. 
Iīve thought about opening up the sleeves but why bother if it still spins OK.

If you aren't doing any weightlifting movements you probably don't need to worry about the spin.  It's still a good thing to do regardless.  Check and see if your bar has bushings or bearings before trying it though.

WD-40 evaporates and is a poor lubricant.  It's great for removing rust though.

I just put some motor oil on a rag and wipe the bar and sleeves down.  Just remove any excess oil before using.

You can use transmission fluid too if you have any sitting around.

well the oil i will use is for my mountain bike chain. Itīs like a clear sort of white.
do the job.
