That photo is awesome, was this Bob Gruskin's living room?

Joe Meeko's mom's/family home.

He didn`t really just give up.....Weider wanted him to enter all of the smaller IFBB contests such as the Mr. America and the Universe and he had already won the AAU and NABBA versions respectively and told Weider to get fucked.

It was as if he had to start over from the bottom after all the years and work he put in as if he was just a nobody and he felt he had already paid his dues which in fact he did.

I still would have loved to see him compete in the IFBB though.

yes i can understand him being pissed at the pettiness of joe. and clearly he was a very good level of physique - only he was swapping organisations & he would've expected
some hoops to get through, I'd of thought it fair & reasonable for him to have to win/place top 3 in the IFBB pro universe before going into the Olympia.

If he thought he was good enough to compete at Olympia level then winning or placing very well at 1 contest like the pro universe wouldn't be asking a lot, I think

Either way it's a shame he never competed in the IFBB.

I dont know which contests qualified for pro cards back then but I thought what the Weiders wanted was for him to win his ifbb pro card. Which he felt he was already pro material?

He did an interview on the legends of bodybuilding and explained it. It wasn't a matter of qualifying for the Olympia.  He had to to qualify to even be an ifbb pro. Which wasn't guaranteed.  Not saying he didn't deserve to be an ifbb pro but i think back then if you didn't win the overall you had to wait another year to try and qualify again?

It was an good interview.  I think he's a county deputy or state trooper now..  Still looks fit but not you'd never know he was a bodybuilder.

It so cool seeing how these guys trained back them
The equipment was so basic yet they built incredible  physiques
Interesting to see Beckles benching with that really wide grip (like Arnold used to use)
Maybe that's why so many guys had great pecs back in the day

Eddie Robinson could have been Jeff's twin.

Jeff King, one of my favourites. He did a combination of bodybuilding and powerlifting to build up his body. Here's his leg workout. One is the typical bodybuilding straight sets routine, the other a powetlifting routine where you pyramid up the weight to a couple of heavy top sets (the first few sets being warm ups)

Jeff had a really unique way of doing leg presses (or maybe it was common back then??) with that "duck" foot position and lowering the weight so that his thighs were virtually parallel with his torso

Those vertical leg presses were tough. Like reverse squats.

Legs

I watched this leg training video all the way through last night
It's interesting to see watch how he performs each movement.
In part of the video he's doing single leg curls using a leg extension machine and his form is so precise.
You can see that he's time the rest intervals.  Also, at ~ 23:30 mark he  talks about how he varies his training from light to heavy and a bit about his diet and other stuff like having to "prove" himself in the US even after winning Mr. America and the Universe.  This is really a great blast from the past

I noticed that he did light good morning exercise for his hams but I don't think I've ever seen him doing RDL (not sure they even called them that back then) or SLDL for hams

Nobody did RDL back then.....Jeff did do heavy deadlifts though.

^^^Pulling at Big Daddys Gym in Springfield Ma.

If you notice Jeff always wears a watch in all his training pics/videos....he timed his rest periods from 30-60 seconds only.

I like how he mentions the book Psycho Blast by Denie.

It was a new one, then.

YOU took that pic of him squatting?!

That’s, like, an infamous oldschool photo, brother.

Awesome.

Sorry. It was your friend. Still, VERY COOL.
