totally unnecessary, I only do side laterals for direct delt work
Chest work does more than enough for delts, delts are designed to raise your arms and push down and away.
Imagine before we walked upright, would we ever have lfted out arms horizontal.
Look at Chimpanzees, do they ever lift things over theor head on a regular basis they pull and push things
I agree with this but it`s ingrained in my training/blood and I enjoy them and have no shoulder issues.

Are BNP's better for overall width/side delt mass than regular overhead presses?
I think they do IMO,but the anterior head is strongly activated as well.

Just my 2 cents.

A good scenario, and a safer one is to pre-exhaust the lateral head by doing lateral raises first then go right into the presses.....you won`t need to go anywhere near as heavy and you are increasing intensity bigtime.

I think with a lighter weight they are safe. It hits the delts at a great angle. Just like pulldowns behind the neck...it just hits the back different

I've done them for many years with no issues
They were an standard shoulder movement for many old school BB's
Serge Nubret did them standing with a very light BB
I'm actually surprised to see this photo of Lee Haney going so heavy
I recall reading somewhere (I think an article or video from Ron Harris) that Haney only used 65 or 70 dumbells for shoulder press

I got a lot of shit for this so I did some research and it looks like these are actually a very safe and great exercise to increase shoulder stability and they hit the 3 heads better than the front press which winds up recruiting the pecs. Supposedly these are great for overall upper back thickness they also felt great after to be honest.

So what do you guys think yeah or no who does then who doesn’t I just did them for the first time this week haven’t done them in over a decade have just used dumbbells and kept it light since the shoulder surgeries but going to do them weekly now it says they are superior to military presses and will increase shoulder stability which is what I need


Back in the late 80s, BTNs were almost as verboten as squats, deemed joint and ligament killers.

But, I've found that most people who still do BTNs did them early in their training years and got flexible enough to where it doesn't bother them now.

Now, the happy medium seems to be either use a Smith Machine or do them LAST after doing other shoulder work, so that you're too fatigued to use superheavy weight and can concentrate on form.



Another option that I've used (courtesy of an article from a former Mr. O) is to do the Hammer Strength shoulder press facing the back rest. That will fry your side delts, BIG TIME!! Or, you could try alternating presses to see if that does the trick (see above video).

Ian actually did upright rows with it before passing it to Nasser to do his set of behind the neck press

We all did PBN heavy in the seventies and eighties,......no problem going heavy either.

If it causes undue pain  don`t do them.

This cat`s been training since he was 8 years old according to him and acts like he just discovered this exercise...........ASSHO LE.  :D

When I first started training I would do dumbbell shoulder presses side laterals front raises and rear 3 sets of 10 for all of them one day a week. My shoulders got overdeveloped as I was also delt dominant on bench and curling top heavy with the front delt. I had some rotator slap injuries and surgeries and stopped training shoulders separately just did chest and some side raises shoulders were really far ahead. Now I am incorporating a little more overhead pressing shoulder work to see if I can bring the left one back up a little but also the upper back trap area gets good activation from it. I usually like dumbbells but trying something different I don’t push too hard as do have shoulder issues.  But I get a really good shoulder pump if I even think about training shoulders always have I wish my chest was the same way

They don't feel right. Neither does benching to my neck. Some exercises work better for some more than others. If it doesn't feel right like it's in my joint or I'm straining something I don't do it.

I've never had trouble with behind the neck pull downs though I do them every week.
