Cardio. Who does it and why?
« on: February 28, 2023, 11:37:00 AM »
What is the GB consensus on cardio?

Fasted or non-fasted?

Does it waste muscle?

Steady state or intervals?

Running or Bikes/rowing/jumping rope?

What is the best time and method?

What is the benefit?

Bodybuilders used to run. Someone said Mentzer ran for up to 10 miles.

I want to incorporate some form of cardio for better heart health/ blood pressure. And I don't want to end up looking anorexic.

I do it for heart health. I shoot for 3 times a week. 20 to 30 minutes. I usually use an elliptical. I like running outside but my joints don't.

I don't think it wastes my muscle but it shoots my metabolism up for sure.

I endeavor towards at least two hours of aerobic exercise per week.  Currently averaging ~2.3 this year so far.

Mix of mostly cycling and some running, swimming, and rowing.  A little cross country skiing when weather allows.

I do it because I feel unhealthy if I don't.

Do you run on concrete? If so, perhaps running on grass, sand or clouds instead might help.

I do low intensity for the most part.

I don’t lift heavy any more either.

Longevity is my goal.

I need to start for heart health/bp. The only time my b/p waa ever in normal range was when I was regularly running, jumping rope or boxing training.

I want the cardiovascular benefits without losing muscle.

I just walk fast for 5-10 miles a day. I usually average 8-9 but I’m good with at least 5. I like to walk at 4.5-5mph. Good to relax, think about shit or don’t think at all.not crazy cardio but enough to make you feel good drop some weight, help bp and keep the blood flowing. Also doesn’t damage the joints badly.

I do a total of 150 to 180 minutes per week, nearly all jogging outdoors, and sometimes walking on the Panata treadmill at the highest difficulty.

 Usually fasted.

There’s no best time.

Reasons: Health, longevity, body composition.

I swim for 60-90 minutes twice a week on my off days. I feel it gives my body a lot of detail, especially shoulders and back, keeps my muscles stretched out, keeps the rotator cuffs healthy, it's resistance training and cardio so you don't wither away, Makes you wider.

4x a week weight training has a conditioning circuit at the end.

1x a week is a full hour conditioning.

"Off" days can be walks or rucks.

No doubt :)

If I tried to run on grass around here I'd just be going around in a circle in my yard. Or jogging through all the neighbor's yards on their grass which wouldn't be cool. There are parks which are a bit of a drive. Ideally I'd swim like someone suggested above but by the time I drive to a pool and change I'd already have finished my cardio on the elliptical so its more efficient this way.

its pretty much useless for fat loss, an hour on a bike is the equivalent of three cookies.

Easier to not eat three cookies and do something productive with the hour.

I do about 120 minutes a week, on a Peleton, at six every morning. I do it for heart health and calorie deficit. It’s actually got my cholesterol down as well. I was on statins for two years and it didn’t do much and the last year and a half I’ve done nothing but add the bike and it’s 170 total. I stopped taking the statins a while back and it was still low. I’m doing blood work again next week so we’ll see what it looks like.

Run 45 min to an hour six days, mainly because I enjoy athletic training and occasionally enter races. Took it more seriously after stopping training BJJ and Muay Thai regularly due to injuries. Running filled the void.

If you’re gonna call yourself an athlete, IMO, running a few miles is something you
Should be able to do.-

Each day Fortress climbs 16-20 floors to help maintain a healthy heart/BP.

The stairwell is directly beside my front door.

Slap on some metal and JAM.

Thats an ass kicker. Even at a normal pace. How long does that take? 10 - 12 mins?
