Something about being in that type of environment makes them try much harder to fit in and they become hyper masculinized.

It was truly cringe seeing the lengths some of them would go to in order to try and get attention. They'd be sneaking down into our rooms at night and all sorts of shit. They cause so much hell. All the losers have their 'wives' on deployments, and both the men and women use that terminology. It turns everything into a high-school environment and fosters pettiness and jealousy. A high number of the women who deployed to Bastion in Afghanistan had to come back because they got pregnant.

It's just that men and women are very much affected by environment. Hierarchy, competition, violence and all of that stuff can have very negative effects on men too, but the effects are usually even more pronounced in women, in my opinion. Female officers are generally more insecure and authoritarian; they worry about not being respected and try hard to maintain a 'tough' demeanor.

The non-commissioned ones usually end up with an even more exaggerated 'frat house' persona than the guys, and try hard to show that they can 'keep up'. Usually, this is expressed through promiscuity and they end up being banged by everyone. I'm not a psychologist, though, and these are just my own unqualified speculations.
