I got to know Toney when I lived in Atlanta.  Super nice guy.  Hilarious.  (have a funny story from Vegas that is for another time - no ice machine). 

Structurally, he was a throw back to the golden age of BBing.  Great proportions, no blown out waist, true X frame.  He did have the torn pec, but it was never really noticeable unless you knew to look for it and then only in the lower BF digits.

Absolute genetic freak. I believe he had a car accident around 1996 which forced him to take time off.

Maybe that is why he was able to compete successfully at an older age?

Seems like top pros get 10 good years...regardless of when they start between 25-35.

It took Toney a while to turn pro. It was slow and steady.  Unlike the guys today that wreck themselves to get their pro card ASAP and then look like shit onstage.  That probably was a factor in his long career. 

Other than Haney, Toney is the most successful BBer from the Atlanta area.  The rest of them - Shabazz, Rowe, Stafford, Curly Top - didn’t amount to a hill of beans or make a dent in the scene.

Although Stanford had potential.  But he disappeared overnight.   Rumors had it he got in trouble and/or caught some health problems and just dropped off the scene.

I'm friends with a model from Georgia. He told me Aaron Clark was also from the state.

Totally genuine confession here - when I glanced at that pic, I thought to myself "Wow - he's destroying Haney (on the left) there!"

Then I looked again and realised they were both Freeman - so that's high praise!

That was before my time.  I wasn't born yet.  So I am not familiar with all the news or hype from back then around the case.  Just from first glance, I would suspect that foul play was involved.

For 12 long years, I suspected foul play!

Only now, given that his car was found in 4th gear when it was pulled from the creek am I leaning towards accident.

It also made me realize: any time that both a person AND their car is found missing...bodies of water should be considered to possibly tell the tale.

But many things are often easier in hindsight - a person leaving on their own accord is also a possibility in such a scenario.

Lurker: are you familiar with LaGrange, GA? I just noticed it's only a couple of hours from Atlanta. Georgia is one of my favourite USA states.
