There are two places in ABQ you 100% avoid.

My GF lives in ABQ.

It's much nicer and safer than Houston, just avoid anything south of I-40. ;D

There is an area of about 5 square miles that pretty much all the gang/cartel shit goes down. And everyone knows better than to go there.

Anthony and Vado, NM are crazy dangerous. But Las Cruces is pretty safe, i spend a lot of time there and have a few properties there.
Santa Fe would be nice with all the horny hippie chicks.

Lots of you getbiggers seem to be worldly travelers, is this for work mostly or leisure. Only place outside the usa I’ve been is Canada. I truly have no interest in seeing other countries but for some reason I am envious of your travels.

Did a 3 week trip out west and stayed in Albuquerque....only stayed one night and moved on. Place is big city rough. People in other towns warned me... Rest of the state was cool though.

Santa Fe would be nice with all the horny hippie chicks.

Some of them are quite nice to hang out with.

The group i hike with are mainly hipsters, but very cool to be around.

Others don't shower and are too dykey for me. Constantly talk about saving trees and gluten free diets. ;D

My neighbor is an old retired musician who knows all the main stream folks in this area.

I've met some very interesting people in Santa Fe.

I spent my 30's traveling all over the world for work.

I've lived in 7 different countries.

Since then i travel to a new place outside the US at least twice a year.

Going to South Africa in August. Was in Peru for 2 weeks in February.

Traveling and living in other countries with different cultures changed my life.

Now all i want to do is travel and meet new people and learn new things.

This world is a fascinating place.

Yeah i'm not saying ABQ is safe, but i've spent a lot of time there and it wasn't any worse than other big America Cities. It has a bad cartel/gang/drug problem and homelessness is out of control. Just got to know where to not go.

New Mexico has a lot of cool places to visit.

And if you like the outdoors it's even better.

Most people completely gloss over NM and don't realize how many beautiful places there are.

You can be in the desert one minute and two hours later at 9k feet in the mountains filled with snow.

In ABQ it can be 60 degrees but in the Sandias it's 20 degrees with snow, only 45 minute drive or take the tram.

Go skiing after work at 5pm. In Santa Fe i've left work early on a Friday to go skiing from 2-5pm. 30 minutes from my house.

Just 2 hours from me i can go skiing, camping in the mountains, mountain climbing, downhill biking, rafting, ride ATV's, walk canyons / malpais, walk inside a caldera/volcano, hunt elk, fish for trout, etc.

Was this when people got stranded there?

I went Macchu Picchu years ago. It is a place to see before they restrict access.

We went in September, for some reason i said February.

Spent a few days in Lima and did the Huayna Picchu hike thing.

Also went to an area near Aguas Calientes to see rivers and waterfalls.

It was a great experience, but i didn't like staying in Lima, i prefer the more country environment.

I think everything is still shut down? Haven't looked into it.

Pretty much this. I was from a large, working-class family and hadn't ever travelled more than once or twice before age 19, but since then I've been to over 40 countries. Mainly for different jobs but also just to try new things and see the world.

I prefer just to stick to Europe for holidays now, and strangely enough I hate flying, but it has been an enormous privilege to have been to parts of the world some people will never get the chance to visit. I, like you (Rob), I suspect, have a tendency to get quite dark and depressed about the state of the world and people in general. However, it's great to have some of my own experiences as a reminder that things aren't always as bleak as they're made out to be on social media.

I never do things like wear stupid hats, national dress or any gay backpacker stuff. I've always just been myself, and had very little issues.

I say get out there, Rob. Go on a hand-throwing tour. Have a straightener with Darren Avey on the cobbles of London Town. Swing by Jalalabad to give Getbig's goat-fucker Mo Omari a rematch. Jump across to the Walmart car park in Florida and shake Shizzo's car so hard he leaps out of bed and thinks there's an earthquake. Then finish off by travelling to the slums of Indonesia to burn down the internet café next to Teutonic Knight's cardboard box so he can't post again. You'll feel great.

I grew up on a farm and the majority of my family has never even left Texas.

I went to the UK when i was 19 and got hooked on traveling.

Meeting people and learning about different cultures is an amazing experience.

I hate flying too, but just deal with it because it's part of the process.

Every place i go i try to blend in and learn some of their customs.

I see myself like Jeremy Wade, but without the fishing. ;D

I go to some of the most secluded places and do a lot of backpacking, but not like a hipster.

I've only had a handful of bad experiences and it was more due to being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Got robbed in Mexico twice.

The hard part of travel is packing your 8 daily prepared meals to stay in the anabolic cocoon.

I know some people going there. They're American but have a son living there currently on mission work. So I don't think the country is shut down any more.

When I visited I did not do the multi day hike, that altitude is a bitch! I took a train and then a short hike. But I did enjoy the pisco sours and those Peru Japanese fusion dishes.

Never been married.

No kids.

I pay cash for everything.

Drive a 9 year old truck.

Just learned the value of money at a young age.

I spend ~$30k a year traveling, that's not a lot of money.

Now, lets talk about my 150-foot yacht.  ;)

Yeah, you're very similar to me in a lot of ways, man. I hike, drive bangers, don't want kids, etc. You've just got way more money than me, haha.

Part of my previous job required me to live with locals and embrace their usual customs, so I enjoy it, but I'll never do their national dress crap just because I look and feel stupid. (I carried a Burka to wear years ago - but that was for security).

I like trying to speak their languages and cook together, but I've never claimed to be anything other than atheist when asked, I've never ate something I didn't want to, and I've never tolerated animal cruelty if I've seen it. I don't care how poor someone is, if he's trying to kick a dog, or he's whipping the fuck out of his donkey or cow, he's getting bollocked at minimum, lol.

I've fortunately never been mugged (been raped though :D), but as I get older I think it just comes down to luck. I've walked all around Rio by myself both day and night, and went to a favela with a girl. I've walked around Belize at night and went to the casino with the crazy locals. Lots of things like that. Maybe people picked up on the arrogance of youth and looked for easier targets, but then when I'd walk around some council estates in the UK, you'd have kids wanting to fight you for no reason, haha. Probably just luck.

The only time I thought maybe I was going to get robbed was in a rough area in the UK really late at night. I was around 20-years-old and walking back by myself when two guys came around the corner and shoulder barged into me. The three of us stood there for a second until one put his hand in his pocket and I assumed it was a knife.

Unbelievably, I ended up being charged and had to do community service in a charity shop afterwards. The laws in the UK are pretty shocking regarding self-defense. Because I did not 'make every effort to escape' or use proportional force, I was the one who got shafted.
