He could have had a future... but he shot himself in the foot with the bridgegate scandal and never recovered. Even after that he could have recovered had he been humble... he could have taken time off to lose weight... get in shape... really give himself a complete makeover before reentering public life. That would have shown the public a level of discipline we have never seen from Christie before.
As it is, despite his intelligence and ability, his appearance makes him a political and social punchline. What would it say about the U.S.A. that this horribly obese man is our representative on the world stage? The optics would be horrendous. Christie has had plenty of time to change his image and physique. He simply does not have the discipline to do so.
Now his only utility is to throw rocks at Trump.
