Impressive, My buddy at 32 and 6’ 240 natural with nothing has done 495 for 20 and 605 for 10 he’s an absolute beast. Just yesterday he did 325 bench for 24 reps and paused the last rep. He’s an animal.

I spotted (bench) my buddy Jason, did 49 reps w/ 225, and 23 reps w/ 315... Also natural.
Freak of nature. He was pretty big though, 275 or so...

No wraps, he does use a belt on occasion. But I know he’s done 495 for 20 No belt. And no belt to bench.

Your friend is VERY strong!  Well done indeed!

I've done mutiple sets of 20 with 515 and 535 followed by 585 for 5.  225 for 100 reps.  315 or 300 (?) for 50 reps.  700lbs vertical leg press for 50 reps.  225lb leg extension for 100 reps and I broke the leg extention machine at 10+ reps with approx. 750lbs.  Humbled two San Diego Chargers on the squat one day.

In my early 50s I could still do multiple sets of 20 with 400+ on the bar.  Not any more.

And I never could bench press for beans.  Or dead lift for that matter.

But as his holines Monsignor bhanky tells us the past ain't now.   :'(   Just memories but they are true and  all mine.  I weighed 250lbs at 6' 1.5" or so.

Crazy impressive Scott, 225x100 that’s nasty as is 300-315 for 50. The strength and cardio is amazing.

Thank you,  Rob.  Coming from you that is high raise indeed.  I was taught about the J.C. Hise breathing squat by two friend at the gym and took it to heart along with drinking up to 3 gallons of milk a day.  It took me about 10 years to go from 135 for 20 to 535 for 20.   I also did not want to run and so doing reps was a form of cardio too.

My sisters found pictures of me at 5' 10" 15 year old weighing 100lbs and then at my largest of 250lbs many years later.  I will never see that level of strength again but I realize my doctors are correct so I do as they tell me.  Thank you again for the kind words.

And per my brothers, part of that was "retard" strength. I love my family but they sure knew how to get to me, LOL!

You were very strong Scott and no one can take that away. Everyone gets one go round some are past, some are in it and some haven’t hit it yet. We all go thru all those phases so even though you don’t do it anymore you have done it and that my friend is something to be proud of in this game cause no matter what we will all get to that point if we are lucky to look back and have done it. That is top notch strength is all rep ranges, some ranges that 99% will never touch. Be proud sir.

Great strength Scott!

Why do you think the squat strength didn’t translate to your deadlift?

Thanks, Dave!  My best was 505.  I just did not have the grip strength to go much, if any, heavier.  I did not want to use straps as my two friends were followers of the old tyme strongmen  and they said my grip would gradually get there. It didn't but it wasn't for lack of trying!  I would do hand to hand dumbell tossing with up to a 50lb DB., throwing into the air at least 6 or 8 feet high and catch alternating my arms and that helped.  It took some time to get to that level but it did not  prove to be enough.

Thick bar training was really hard but when I did deadlifts I used a standard oly bar and just did high rep "death sets" of 20 to 50 reps with 135 to 300lbs.  depending upon my energy level.   Death sets were done without letting go of the bar.  I would drop to one knee gasping for air after 20 or so reps but never release the bar until I reach the agreed upon final number.  It could take a while and  I would collapse on the gym floor when it was done, LOL!

J.C. Hise became an Iron Hero to me and I also thought highly of my two gym buddies.   Good men.

505 is a good number, but I understand what you mean when you say comparative to your squat. strap’s probably would have helped you handle heavier weight and in turn improve your grip strength (at least that’s been my experience

Did you stay fairly with the high rep sets?

You were a physically strong dude in your prime but it sounds like you’re even stronger today living through life’s obstacles.

I watched Joe win some of his AAU titles like the Mr. America in Atlantic City.  I was sitting right behind Jeff King at the prejudging.  Joe get hooked on rec/pain drugs and that was about the end of things from some other gym owners local to my area told me.  He was from the next county over near me.
