LOS ANGELES (AP) — Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten, a former homecoming princess who at 19 helped carry out the shocking killings of a wealthy Los Angeles couple at the direction of the violent and manipulative cult leader, walked out of a California prison Tuesday after serving more than 50 years of a life sentence.

Van Houten, now 73, “was released to parole supervision,” the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a statement.

She left the California Institution for Women in Corona, east of Los Angeles, in the early morning hours and was driven to transitional housing, her attorney Nancy Tetreault said.

I wonder what getbigger is going to try and date her.

What is "transitional housing"? A halfway house? Or just some place to live until she finds a place of her own?

In 2005, I watched a movie about Charles Manson. I can't remember the name, but in one scene, Manson said that we consider ourselves better than animals, even though we kill them. I think this was from a scene of his trial.

Something like that.

It may have been a Made For TV movie, and it was pretty good. I can't figure out what movie it was, but I do recall that "better than animals" line.

I want to say this movie was maybe from 1980, and in colour.

If any Getbiggers know what movie this was, please let me know. I wouldn't mind watching it again.

I was just reading about her murders - the LaBianca murders [two people + one count of conspiracy to commit murder]:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tate%E2%80%93LaBianca_murders

Fifty years may not be long to some, but in Canada, you have people out in six years for manslaughter:

https://images.ourontario.ca/gateway/details.asp?ID=2233127

^ If he shot that teen in the head, he would have been convicted of murder and given a bigger sentence, but beating a teenager to death and killing him over a 24-hour time-frame is only manslaughter, and a 6-year sentence?  ???

Meanwhile, the dude [Garnet Loon] went on to kill again:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/thunder-bay/garnet-loon-sentenced-1.5446273

^ That's Canadian justice.

Fifty years in jail would be unheard of here. So even though I agree with you that it is low, Mike - it's way more jail time than people get here.

She stabbed that poor woman over a dozen times! ... the terror that poor woman went thru! Imo she should have never gotten out! .... I hope some relative of that woman's family dishes out some " street justice!" Since the courts failed them!

I agree with you Mike that she should not have gotten out.  That being said, I actually believe she no longer poses any threat to society.  But still should not have gotten out.

I remember when this was on the News ( was a kid ) we were all gripped in fear and panic ...the Sharon Tate and labianca slaughter/murders were so particularly brutal and gruesome.... this was the tail end of the " sixties " peace love And hippies ......we never locked our doors until this happened ..... read the details of the murders if you aren't familiar with them .... nobody associated with that should ever be released into society!

I agree. The fact she likely poses no threat to society should not factor into it. She did something so atrocious she should have been put to death. The 2nd option is life without parole. I don't care if she is too old to pose a threat.. she forfeited her right to live in society 50 years ago.

This.

The saving grace is  I’m sure she will die in some horrific manner probably getting mugged while walking back from the grocery store to her apartment/halfway house in Pomona or wherever she can afford to scrape out a living.

That might be it!

Holy shit...good detective work, Phantom - that scene at 44:44 looks very familiar. I'll have to watch it all later today to see.

The only other I saw that looked somewhat similar were portions of the 1997 movie below - and for some reason...I think it may have been fictionalized. But I'm not sure.

I remember thinking that Manson made compelling arguments, but I was 23 at the time. I'm not sure if any arguments by Charles Manson would persuade me now.

Van Houten by some margin had the most going for her out of all the Manson girls - looks, brains, social standing, homecoming princess - but all brought undone by being a diagnosed follower and replacement father figure seeker, a propensity to drugs and addiction (via her father), a whole lotta resentment based on teenage-era episodes (forced abortion, divorce with a weird parental dynamic) and being at the right place at the right time but meeting the wrong person. The little rat-faced weasel Charlie exploited things deftly as only a lifetime criminal with an obsession with Scientology and human manipulation ,pimp aspirations, god complex, and an even bigger resentment could do

A reasonable and legally solid case can -and obviously ultimately has been made - for her release given its been 50+years now along with some mitigating circumstances such as her youth at the time, brain washing, excellent prison record and perceived reform/insight.......but the nature of the crime, its attendant deserved infamy, the trial antics, and the fact she effectively was the only killer to essentially volunteer to go out and murder sort of makes it a "nah you shoulda stayed locked up for life" in my book
