Van Houten by some margin had the most going for her out of all the Manson girls - looks, brains, social standing, homecoming princess - but all brought undone by being a diagnosed follower and replacement father figure seeker, a propensity to drugs and addiction (via her father), a whole lotta resentment based on teenage-era episodes (forced abortion, divorce with a weird parental dynamic) and being at the right place at the right time but meeting the wrong person. The little rat-faced weasel Charlie exploited things deftly as only a lifetime criminal with an obsession with Scientology and human manipulation ,pimp aspirations, god complex, and an even bigger resentment could do
A reasonable and legally solid case can -and obviously ultimately has been made - for her release given its been 50+years now along with some mitigating circumstances such as her youth at the time, brain washing, excellent prison record and
perceived reform/insight.......but the nature of the crime, its attendant deserved infamy, the trial antics, and the fact she effectively was the only killer to essentially
volunteer to go out and murder sort of makes it a "nah you shoulda stayed locked up for life" in my book
