MacBook help! Repeating restart/poweroff

Sorry, I couldn't think of anywhere else to post this or ask this question.

*I'm new to Mac's. Gotta MacBook Pro (late 2011 model I believe). All refurbished, i7,16g RAM etc.. bout 3 months ago.

It's a worked flawlessly and silently until tonight.

I'm writing emails after big dinner & Benedryl, doze off with head on the keyboard. While KillTony was playing on YouTube in background app.

Wake up and YouTube is off & I'm on another screen from like an ad or something I must have clicked with my hand or forehead. And I notice my trackpad is a little difficult to use then I noticed some what looks to be sweat on the trackpad near the bottom. (I sweat when I sleep.. esp when I first doze off & esp my face & neck/chest/back)

No worries, I wipe the sweat.. takes 3-4 wipes, and the trackpad is working and I can get the cursor back to the YouTube tab So I can get back to work.

About a minute or two later, the screen turns black, laptop shuts down. It's plugged in fully powered. I click power button and initially on the first try it gets me to the login screen so I can enter the password. I do. 3 seconds later it does the same thing and shuts down.

I search Google.

Finally I find the method of pressing/holding Control/Option/Esc while pressing the little arrow thing on the startup screen under "MacOS".

No so long as I remain holding down Control/Option/Esc, I will get all the way to the login password page and I can even search and browse the computer so long as I keep holding down those buttons.

Soon as I let go of those buttons, I get a pop-up box that says "are you sure you want to shut down your computer?" With shut down highlighted and a second or two later it will shut down and I'm back at square one, with the black repeating startup screen.

Does anybody have any experience or input? .....It's not exactly practical to only use the laptop if I have my index finger holding down that esc button and my thumb hold it down the control and option buttons lol

Back to the actual issue..  when my 17" HP 'died', I made the jump to this 15-in MacBook Pro, fully refurbished i7, 16GB RAM, 1 or 2 TB HD and an iPad 2 Air w/Retina cuz they supposedly were rock-solid.

Never froze, never had to restart, etc.. and for the past few months since I'd had'em, they've been great... And dead silent. The fans on that 17" HP were always buzzing. Until tonight I'd never heard this laptop make sound & didn't even think it had a fan.

Haven't used a Mac since Senior year in highschool 99/00, with those turquoise or green or fuchsia translucent iMac cube things with the little circle mouse in the school "computer lab"....

Maybe when your head hit the board or when the sweat got in there it made the buttons sticky and created some short telling the computer to shut down. 

Sticky buttons can cause problems for computers that have surfed through Kwon threads.  Robc has had similar issues with his doorbell.

This is a good suggestion and I think he made a smart move by coming here to get help solving this issue.

Apple would not even give the guitar string as an option because they are only focused on money!

I think he should submerge the laptop in a tank of water for 30 seconds then place it in a bag of rice for 4 hours to get rid of all the moisture.

These fragile electronic components need the same external exposure to work correctly.

Cool story bro…. I highly doubt you ever broke an excel spreadsheet with one or used a decade old MacBook as a pillow……

I have a base 2011/12 MacBook (the last year it had the cd/optical drive built in) and the hard drive failed after 2 years, literally a month after the applecare expired. I asked the guy at the Apple Store about it failing when it wasn’t that old and he doesn’t wait for me to finish my thought when he said,” that’s what hard drives do, they fail. These aren’t going to last forever.”

It was seriously one of the funniest comments I ever heard from a “professional” about their product.

I still have it,and it works. maybe ESF can keep his pillow and use this one!

Get out your recovery discs and reset to factory and install the OS from the disc.  If this works, you can then go online and do software and firmware updates from fApple.

Far as I know it was completely rebuilt & upgraded, as it was the last year before a troublesome design change... Or something. I dunno (obviously), but this year is desirable. And aside from some minimal wear on the bottom, it looks flawless.

Anyways...

Only had it a few months, there's nothing saved on the hard drive that I would care about losing. Do you mean what the system? And reinstall the OS? It came with a new OS already installed I am completely unfamiliar with Mac OS's what I have to purchase an OS? Like windows or something? Didn't come with any discs or any operating system USBs or anything or any recovery stuff whatsoever. Just laptop and latest Mac OS installed.

Soon as my finger came off one of those buttons for a second I would get that "are you sure you want to shut down" pop up, with the shutdown already highlighted and didn't matter if I could click on cancel restart or the sleep buttons instead.

Doing some reading last night I came across some issues where it was the keyboard and some moisture or something got into some button and created a shortcut to get that pop up to pop up but when they used a USB (or Bluetooth ??) keyboard connected to the laptop they could side step the issue.   

It happened after 11:00 last night so Walmart was already closed so I couldn't pick up any of that compressed air PC duster shit. Maybe that would have helped Who knows...

.. I appreciate the responses though from everybody. Should be getting home in about 10 or 15 minutes to try and turn it on and see if there's any improvement.

Side note take a trip to Victoria Gardens and have apple diagnose the issue or use one of the Mac Repair centers by you, I think even Best Buy can diagnose issues now.

Yea I'll likely be heading there this week.

I've been too busy & stretched to want to even think about it this past week, so I just been getting by with my iPad and my phones lol

I did come across a YouTube video where I fella and apple reef pear fella was troubleshooting the very similar issue and I believe he mentioned something about getting around the issue by using an external keyboard. It'd be a Band-Aid, yes, but I'm afraid replacing the keyboard on this laptop is going to cost me the same as what I paid for the laptop lol.

*I didn't get it from some random fella, I got it from a company that refurbishes MacBooks with new components.
