I don't recall any films like that prior...

Yes you do, Enter the Dragon. Bruce Lee was revenging the harm done to his sister. Lee was the original John Wick.

revenge films have been around since films started

every single film /story has one of these narratives
Overcoming the Monster. The protagonist must defeat an antagonist (usually an individual, force, or entity) that threatens them and the wider world.

Rags to Riches. The protagonist achieves something they lack, loses what they’ve gained, and then gets it back again.

The Quest. The protagonist must set out in pursuit of a treasure, place, or other goal, overcoming challenges along the way.

Voyage and Return. The protagonist travels to a strange new place, experiences hardships and makes discoveries, and then returns home with the lessons they have learned.

Comedy. The protagonist experiences a series of lighthearted or confusing events, before the story resolves into a happy ending.

Tragedy. The protagonist has a central trait or flaw or makes a mistake, which results in catastrophe.

Rebirth. The protagonist undergoes a transformation, and often ends up a better person as a result.

Well,, in comunist China, nobody had money to guns and bullets. They had to rely in their fists.
Enter the Dragon was the poor man's version of war movies.

The dart scenes were ludicrous!!   ;D

I remember going to  karate flick back in the 70`s where a guy picked up a heavy chest of gold, threw it upwards, then jumped up on the cliff and caught the chest just as it arrived at the top...........kids in the theater were saying "that's for real.........'they can really do that"  !!   ;D

we used to sneak in to the cineman watching all the kung fu flicks, Bruce Li, Bruce le, Bronson Lee
There was loads of them

Another little independent cinema used to let us in watching all the 18 cert movies when we were 14/15, as long as we had money they didnt give a fuck

Saw Scanners when I was 16 at the movies, the head exploding was great on the big screen

We used to go into Boston's 'China-Town', they would play Kung-Fu movies 24x7. (Small Indy theatre).
We'd go on a SAT afternoon, bring in beer, weed, no one cared... $2.50 to get in, and you could leave whenever you wanted to.
(Stay all day if you wanted).

'Scanners', a favorite from the past...

We were scumbags as kids.....we`d take a cab downtown, ask the driver to stop a few blocks away from the theater then run without paying him.

Once at the movies we`d usually catch a Hammer film, along with a blackzploitation film like "Truck Turner" or "Shaft" then a Vincent price flick such as the "Oblong Box' all for 50 cents or so, plus a fucking cartoon.

Signed Methuslah father!!  ;D
