Just partially torn my tricep, what do i do now?
« on: September 03, 2023, 09:52:23 AM »
At the gym this morning, did seated French presses, started with 60, then 80, then 100 bar. Tricep was nice and warmed up when i got to the 100 bar. Go pretty low behind my head, getting a good stretch. Then went to nose busters, with the same 100 bar. Second set of 10 reps, rep number 5, actually FELT THE POP!!!!

Dropped the weight, looked at my arm, and checked for the rubber band effect. Luckily, still attached at the elbow. Slight pain started. Immediately went home, looked in the mirror, no bruises, but pain is getting worse moving the arm. Looking at google, looks like a grade two tear. Upper tie in to the shoulder is ok. Seems to be painful in the belly of the tricep.

66, what do i do now??????? Ice and Motrin?????

Can you tell if the tricep is misshapen?  Feel like the tendons are still attached? Might be a muscle tear with out the tendon ripped. Get an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon who will order an MRI.  Pick one that specializes in elbow down. These orthos that say they do everything are hacks.

Go see an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in this. What else would you do?

Ice is no longer used except to reduce swelling.

If it's swelling then you have a serious issue and see a doctor ASAP.

So, ibuprofen for pain if necessary.  Keep it moving in a pain free manner to eliminate waste products and speed healing.

Tricep is not misshaped. No bruising. Tells me it’s attached at both ends, which is good. Just painful in the middle belly of the tricep. No swelling. Pain if i pretend I’m doing a tricep push down, pain is right in the middle of the tricep, on the bottom.

Sometimes I think when you get to mid 60's it's time to give up the heavy weights. We all know the exceptions that still push the heavy lifts but it's always one rep away from potentially breaking something. Wouldn't it be better to lift in a controlled slow motion as we age. Nothing will prevent injuries but we have to try to put the odds in our favor.

On a related topic I know a guy that was proud of his pull ups his whole life. Here he is in his 60's being challenged by a young buck to a pullup challenge. Of course the old guy ripped his bicep.

By your 60’s you’re probably better off just using a Total Gym (Chuck Norris).

I use it now myself sometimes and it feels quite easy on my body and creates better balance from the stabilization.

Hopefully your tricep is okay; it doesn’t seem like it’s “Sheared from the bone” so maybe you can recover more easily.

At your age it might be a sign that weights will cause problems.

I'd play it safe now and switch to bands with high volume instead of weights.

They get heaviest at the muscles strong point and lighten up at its weak point.

Well I knew that I was older, more subsequently prone to injuries, it’s why i never bench over 2 plates anymore. But i was always strong in tricep work, getting a real good stretch on seated French presses, and banging out nose busters. But i have been doing this tricep workout for some time now, always ending up with the 100 pound bar. Never dawned on me that this would happen. Was totally warmed up, sweating, was supper setting biceps curls. Total shock to feel that fucking pop.

Checking for bruises, none yet. I think i got very lucky. And yes, when this clears up, for sure i will revamp my arm workout. No more 100 pound bar. Freaks me out looking back at that last set, and feeling that snap. Just like all the videos. You actually feel the muscle tearing. Unbelievable

Been lifting for 40 years, all heavy lifting. And you want me to start using bands.??????? ??? :)

Go right back at doing the same exercise but use more weight, preferably 125 pounds. Worked for me when I heard a pop in my triceps years ago

people keep putting their bodies in unnatural positions and then wonder why they get an injury

with your arms overhead and your triceps fully stretched out its in its weakest most vulnerable position

Remember you are only as strong as the weakest part of the exercise.

Especially if aesthetics is important to you get the surgery if it possible.
I tore my bicep and it would probably have regained all strength back But I don't wan't Dorian's shriveled arm you know. My biceps are already very short and after a couple of years probably wouldn't been a bicep left, just a shriveled up bean.

Bruising can take 3 or even more days to show. I waited til the bruising showed until I went to the doc, thes docs can't always tell shit by squeesing and palpating, but they know something happened seeing the bruise.

Yeah you're right. No reason to adapt your training to your 66yrs of age. Keep going hard

Treatment for grade 2 strain is appropriate rest and recovery, probably 2-4 months before you start to load it back up again.  Consider visiting a physical therapist, they’ll be able give you a timetable and recovery plan.

At my age, I now do a lot more specific warmup sets before I actually begin a work set on any exercise, and I keep my form perfect.

Bands and machines get a bad rep because they don't look as hardcore. But try switching over and you might come round. Bands have door anchors now.

I don't know if you could build a physique from scratch with bands, but once you've already built your mass, they're great tools.

Judo dont pay attention to the naysayers.  Get checked out and keep training once healed.

Iit doesn't matter what the weight was, f you did this with 20 pounds you would have done to many reps.; everyone is an expert.
