Free weights vs. Machines
« on: September 06, 2023, 12:23:35 PM »
Not sure if you guys have noticed, but it seems like majority of pros (despite a select few) and mainly training with machines. Very rarely do I see heavy dumbell and barbell work, have you guys noticed this? Maybe that's the reason a lot of them lack density? Don't get me wrong I use machines for certain movements, but the meat and potatoes of my training revolves around barbell/dumbbell movements.

The amount of gear these guys take, they take the easy way out... (Will grow no matter what).
Machines have a purpose, but barbell/dumbbell training is king...

Never use free weights but only machines and at all costs avoid injuries.
The goal is to age healthily and practice
until the end of your life.

All pros train on machines, free weights are only
for shooting. Easier to move around in a well-lit area of the gym with barbell and dumbbell.

Never do a deadlift. The most destructive exercise.
Avoid squats and bench presses.

No one is a warrior, no one has the same morpho anato.
Tom Platz, for example, has the characteristics of a dwarf that allowed him to develop his legs and prevent injuries with squat.

Never copy anyone.

You might be able to train much "harder" with machines. Machines increase stability, when you don't have to stabilise you can achieve higher target muscle output on a machine. Compare a leg press to a squat. I think you can get much closer to quadriceps failure on a leg press. With squats your form typically starts to deteriorate as the set goes on and when you fail it's maybe because your back rounds and your chest collapses.

Most bodybuilders who claim to only train with "free weights" typically use about 90% machines. They don't even know wtf they are claiming. Who trains calves with free weights only? Who doesn't do machine pulldowns? Who never uses machines for hamstrings?

There are some moves where free weights might be preferable - just pick the best tool for the job.

Machines can be safer too if they are well constructed. Pec tears are more rare on machines.

I love some free weight moves though. Not because I think I will grow faster, I just enjoy it.

Who the hell knows what "density" even means? Wasn't Dorian's back dense - it was mostly machines and he could easily have substituted the barbell row with a machine imo.

Which is better and or safer?

Machines for the most part will stress the target muscle more than the equivalent free weight exercise

They are also safer

However they don't work the hidden stabiliser muscles as much

I mix it up as most of us more than likely do.

I no longer bench, but use free weights on DB Inclines,no squatting due to bulging discs and have to be careful rowing, but mostly use free weights.

I get the logic on machines and do like hammer strength pressing machines but just prefer the feel of free weights

Also what would this translate to on a conventional bar ? It looks like no breaths are being taken during the lift?

You`re not too jealous of Matt are you Brian?

He lives rent free in your head.....you`d never equal his power,he weighs 170 pounds.

You can never come close to translating stuff like that......some guys are better at reps some are great at one rep maxes.........it`s more than you can do though.....that is an accurate statement.

He claims his current bodyweight is over 200 and about a week ago he claimed a 635lb deadlift. I am just trying to clarify if this machine is what he meant when he said he could deadlift 635lbs

You`re jealous that`s why you critiqued his form on seated db presses.... when you shake like a bowl of Jello benching, and do wobbly half squats.......you`ve got brass balls pal.

He`s light years more powerful than you`ll ever be.

You could just PM him you know.....it would make you look like less of a jealous imbecile.

I am absolutely stronger than Matt read his own admission he recently maxed out at 295lbs on bench and not even sure he meant a real bench press just like he sure as hell didnt mean a real deadlift

It works when you apply it to yourself but for others it`s null and void.

OK Brian I see how we are playing semantics again per usual.
