Haney gave up his dream of winning the Olympia 15 times in a row.

Sad.

Such a quitter.

I remember that Olympia. Shawn Ray talked so much shit prior to the show. He thought that he was going to dethrone Haney.  Ended up placing 5th! He could’ve been placed even lower because Benfatto and Schmidt were in top shape.

He would also have to beat Kevin Levrone [1992, 1995], Flex Wheeler [1993], Shawn Ray [1994, 1996], and Nasser El Sonbaty [1997].

Assuming Dorian was not in the picture, would Lee Haney have won any additional Mr. Olympia contests?

I remember a 1991 article, possibly from FLEX magazine, where Shawn was pointing out some of the flaws Lee Haney's physique. I remember he mentioned the lack of hardness in Lee Haney's back - or possibly just his lower back. I can't remember any other flaws he mentioned. Haney was pretty complete. What else did he lack, aside from just getting bigger, or maybe a bit more shredded, in general? Maybe his arms were a tad small for his upper body?

Shawn would not have said that Lee wasn't big enough. He may have mentioned overall conditioning, but I can't remember. But it was a pretty scathing assessment by Shawn.

Shawn was pretty good - to come 2nd twice, in a very competitive era. Although Lee Haney did fairly beat him.

Shawn was closest to Lee in 1990, when the threat of drug testing caused some of the guys to come in looking much worse. I don't know what drugs they tested for, but it definitely impacted some of the physiques that year.

He left because he didn't want to do it anymore, I doubt he was worried about Yates.

In his acceptance speech at the 1991 Mr Olympia contest " Lee Haney 1991 Mr Olympia

Well Lee are you going to retire now? You know something I've been competing now for 9 years and I finally learned how to peak. So I might be around for a few more years.
"

Of course he was worried about Yates. Great line in the movie American Gangster " Quitting while you're ahead is not the same as quitting " Haney retired in the best shape of his life , beat Arnold's record and cemented his legacy. retired at 31 and walked away way ahead of the game

He did 405 for 5 or 6 in a training video with Ty "Roper" from the mid-eighties.

Haney faced either having to up the dose to try and stay with Dorian or retire, Dorian was improving at a much faster rate than Haney was at that stage, with not guarantees that even upping the dose would hold him off and Lees conservative approach to using he decided to retire. Genetically Lee had plenty left he IMO was like Ronnie before Ronnie hit it hard with the Chad, he could have gone harder and stayed with Yates size wise, condition wise was the issue, not many could look like Dorian from head to toe.

It also had to do with how many O's he had won at that point.  Chances of anyone passing seemed remote.  It's hard to put together that long a streak

Lawdy but Shawn Ray comes off sounding "scripted" like a  badly written skit from the WWE.

Yes. I had that exact magazine. Damn, Shawn really put his foot in his mouth.

Pretty much. Hit had little to do with it. He just simply upped the dosage of GH.

Christian and Benfatto were the only 2 in pro contest condition
