Guitar thread - acoustic, rock, metal, bass
« on: October 05, 2023, 02:49:50 AM »
I have decided my love for guitars of late.

Hoping we might have some people who appreciate this instrument. Even if you don’t play, guitars you like or photos of rock bands, artists you like should be welcomed.

I’m currently listening to a lot of Guns n Roses right now and learning Slash’s parts on a Les Paul I just bought.

IMO, the most underrated guitarist of the 80s. His combination of technical, melodic and songwriting is matched by very few:

Malsteen is a beast.

I have a Kirk Hammet KH3 with scalloped frets from 17 up. Closest I get to Malmsteen lol.

Been playing for 40+ years. Was signed in the 80's to a metal label (New Rennaissance Records).
Played in many other bands since. I've played both bass and guitar in my old bands...

Here in my office I have 6 instruments (3 guitars, 3 bass). My favorites are Fender Precision (bass) and Fender Stat (guitar)...

I like Peavey and Ampeg bass amps, and of course Marshall guitar amps...

Favorite bands:

1. Molly Hatchet
2. Maiden
3. Priest
4. UFO
5. Rush
6. Sweet
7. Motorhead
8. Rory Gallagher
9. Thin Lizzy
10. Black Oak

Very nice. I taught myself from age 12 and had a few fun guitars throughout the years. Nothing crazy, but I had a nice Mexican Stratocaster and a custom-built Telecaster. I still have a Spanish acoustic and my cheap Epiphone SG I got when I turned 15, which I plan to one-day have fully rebuilt with nicer parts. I never have time to play these days, but I still mess around with little blues scales and classical pieces.

I used to jam Guns N' Roses songs all the time with my best mate when we were young. He's becoming a father for the first time soon, so my surprise gift I'm getting him is a Gibson Les Paul Studio with the baby's name engraved on a custom truss-rod cover.

I took it up for awhile but realized pretty quickly that the best I could do was to be “Okay.” Figured I’d leave it to those with real talent.

My list is similar. One missing is The Outlaws. Green and High Tides is their most recognized song but this is a guitar masterpiece as well.

This story I was told about Les Paul stuck with me through the years. He was a big fan in his elder years of going to local clubs to hear the rock bands. No one knew who he was in many of the places.  The local rock band just finished their set and a little old man walks up to the stage and asked if he could play the guitarist's guitar.  They had no clue who he was but the lead singer went on the microphone saying he wants to play a song.  Les Paul gets up and starts playing. They were blown away and asked what his name was.  He said, "It's right on your guitar."

I'm lefty and took up the guitar. Tab drove me crazy trying to reverse it until I found a few lefty books. I have a nice Martin acoustic. I bought the cheapest they make but it's still expensive. My wife told me to buy a cheap one to see if I will stick with it.  She plays the guitar.  Of course I told her if I have to trade up it will be a waste of money buying a cheap guitar. I only stuck with it for around 4 months. Trying to teach myself I ran into so many road blocks. My wife was little help because she plays by ear. She listened to Dueling banjos and in one sitting figured it out. I can't figure out Mary had a little lamb. Every once in awhile I pull out that guitar and feel sorry for it that it's not being played by someone that knows what they are doing. I will sell it soon. It's case has been collecting dust for over a decade.

I love the Outlaws, the old band, Hughie, Monte, etc... Saw them w/ Hatchet many times in early 80's... Danny Joe and Hughie were "Bro's"!

It’s actually sad to watch old Molly Hatchet. Everyone on the stage is gone.😢

All 6 originals are dead. The early guys who came in after, in the 80's (Jimmy Farrar (vox) on Beatin' The Odds, Riff West on Bass) also dead...
All died in 50's and 60's... Hardcore party lifestyle, smoking drinking, etc...

I absolutely despise all of the fretboard wankery from the likes of Malmsteen, Gilbert, Satriani et al, but this particular piece from Jason Becker is fantastic. Some might describe it as a blatant SRV 'Life Without You' rip-off, but I prefer to think of it as a nod to that masterpiece with the addition of some brilliant technical playing to make it very original:

I'm also really enjoying the simple blues style of this guy Tab Benoit. He's awesome.

Yesterday I received my (signed) copy of the new George “Mr. Scary” Lynch solo/instrumental CD, Guitars At The End Of The World.

Also recently received the two newest offerings from Eric Johnson.

As well as Steve Lukather’s latest.

And a reissued Steve Morse album.

I`m a blues freak:

Gary Moore...(I know this wasn`t the genre` he began with)
Albert King
Buddy Guy (not that great as he aged)
Freddie King
Luther Tucker
STEVIE RAY VAUGHN (AWESOME)
Johnny Winter
Bobby Radcliffe
Warren Haynes
Derek Trucks
Dickey Betts
Duane Allman
Hollywood Fats
Kid Ramos
Bobby Bland
Otis Rush
Eric Clapton
Jeff Beck (various genres also)
Bonnie Raitt (great slide guitarist)
Rick Derringer
Albert Collins
Johnny Copeland
Coco Montoya
Jimmy Johnson
Billy Gibbons
T-Bone Walker
Fred Kaplan (infamous sideman)
Jimmy Page

And the list goes on and on......various degrees of greatness as far as blues guitar goes.

Thankyou all for such positives posts in this thread. I’m going to read and watch the videos posted over the weekend 😀

Funk51 I used a Marshall Tucker Band song in my last downhill MTB video I filmed with drones. After watching Jeremy Clarkson’s Farm i had to use it. Such a brilliant clean sound on guitar.
