The point of voting
« on: October 26, 2023, 11:25:57 PM »
I recently had a (heated) conversation with my lawyer about voting. He told me it was my civil duty to vote. I don't vote, nor have I. Not because I don't want to but because there's nobody worth voting for - and they never live up to their election promises.

I can get voting once. You listen to all sides, you judge them on what they say they will do when they get into office. Then they don't do it or they water it down so much that it's ineffective.

I can sort of get voting twice. You got lied to the first time, maybe they will do what they say the second time - but nope - election promises disappear once elected.

Voting more than twice - makes you a mark in my opinion. You have basically accepted that your guy won't do what he says and your only real rationale to vote is to vote AGAINST the other side - who you fear will do worse stuff than your guy. Although you never know what the other side will do because both sides are clearly bullshitting as you come close to an election.

It all seems farcical to me.

I didn't care for Trump in 2016 but voted for him because he would select Supreme Court judges.

Most people vote with their wallet.

Whichever candidate will put more money in their wallet is their choice regardless of candidate.

A handful of votes decided the 2000 presidential election.  A comparative handful of votes in several swing states decided the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections.  Your vote matters.  When not enough people vote we wind up with people like Hank Johnson (Guam may tip over), Mazie Hirono, Eric Swalwell, George Santos, etc.
