 Great pic showing just how bad methead was in 79. ( and worse in 80)  I have the magazine from that 70 contest and Meth's belly was sticking out like they are now days. He could hold it in at times but when he couldn't he looked horrible!!

Thats a particularly bad image as an example. Zane was unreal that year and Mentzer was winning going into the night show. Back then the night show was just to be for the fans and maybe for tie breakers. Mentzer already believed he had won the contest.

A similar situation happened with Danny Padilla and Robby Robinson at that years Night of Champions. Padilla had a perfect score of 300 and Robby had 298 or 299. They had them do a pose off and Robby won. He beat a guy who scored the maximum allowable points.

How in the world did he win the heavyweight division with that bloated physique? Was he the only competitor?

   I can't recall who the few were in the heavyweights bit none were that good really. Most were in the under 200 lbs. In fact I think even Robby dieted down that year. I might be wrong)  But I do know this had it been one class methead would have gotten beat by a whole bunch of " little guys". Even more so than in 1980!  In fact his heavyweight win( in 79) was a gift in itself and so was his 5th place in 1980. I wonder how much he would have complained that year! lol  LOSER

79 had almost the exact same line-up as 80 minus Robby and Beckles. 80 had Arnold Samir and casey. Otherwise it was pretty much the same line up.
