True

And the religious scriptures were written by some old dudes with too much time on their hands back in the day anyways

I got married in a house and then a  rice field - all ceremonial. I'm not religious but we did have a Buddhist ceremony for the wife.

I'm not a big fan of the law either - so we didn't get married legally until 16 years later. Can't be too careful.

And if you think that took a long time - I have jobs around the house that the wife has nagged me about for longer.

Early childhood religious education is the original "grooming".

Pretend that religion as we know it didn't exist.  We spent the 1st 40-50 years of our lives learning reading, writing, arithmetic, science, etc.  Then one day someone comes to you with 2 books.  One is the Bible the other is Star Wars.  I posit one is no more far fetched than the other but gun to my head I'd say the Bible has more unbelievable stories than Star Wars or any other science fiction.

Married in a rice field? Never heard of that

How does that work?

All the people standing in the rice field?

Ever read any L. Ron Hubbard books? There's some good stuff in there.

I had his book "Dianetics" in the 70s

The book which they call "Book One" by Scientologists.

Very interesting.
The whole "auditing" idea is kind of a modern take on the Catholic Rite of Confession.
Unfortunately the powers in Scientology appear to use the very personal information gained as a means of control.

I agree that religion is for the most part worthless and definitely is a form of grooming; but to say Star Wars is more realistic than the Bible is ludicrous. No matter what you believe  Bible at least contains some historical facts.

For centuries the virgin birth of Jesus seemed like a fairy tale; today it is a scientific possibility that virgin can be artificially inseminated and give birth without ever having sex.  Noah and the ark also seems like a ridiculous story but many scientists agree that a major flood took place on earth that wiped out a large portion of life.

People can believe what they want and recent history proves this true; look no further than the covid pandemic. Obviously if we believe something from early childhood it becomes a bedrock foundation of our life and we accept it those beliefs as true. The true fool is the one who never examines those beliefs and evaluates why they believe what they do.

Even if he didn't exist, the idea of Jesus is beautiful.  My problem is that most Christians ignore his teachings and revert to the Old Testament barbarism in spite of the fact that Jesus came with a new covenant which should have rendered the Old Testament irrelevant or given back to the Jews.  I don't mean that to disparage my Jewish friends either.

Yeah, the leaders are just bilking the dumb dumbs who pay them money. Miscavige is in his 60's now and has been chain smoking since his teens so his time should be up soon. If he dies maybe Tom Cruise will be the new leader. 8)

This board made me believe God was a joke......a fictional character..........I became a doubting Thomas even after surviving Catholic school in the 60`s, and having been brainwashed by the cult that the Catholic religion is....... and trust me if you survived it in the 1960`s you were a bad muthafucker.

I can go into it but I won`t, but someone is watching over me and I don`t think it`s "Felix The Cat" so I now have renewed faith that God exists.

I`m just not that lucky to have survived the laundry list of shit that I have been through without some help from "up above" if you will.

I thank God several times a day that I`m alive, where at various points in my life I couldn`t have cared less if I woke up in the morning.

I don`t go to church and do not believe in any organized bullshit religion I just have my own philosophy which is to try to do the right thing everyday.......if I  fail,I try again tomorrow.

Having been dead, I can attest to there being someone and more, brother.   Your words are well said, brother.   I used to tell people God requires neither a house nor money from us.  You cannot buy salvation.  You cannot earn salvation.   It is given freely.    I had a friend that got mad at me because I am not as learned as many pastors with degrees.

I simply told him that is pretty much what the Rabbis said about the Nazarene.  He was just a carpenter and they were educated men.

When the Nazarene forgave the woman caught in adultery (strange is it not that the men who caught her failed to catch the man she was with?) He said, "Go.  And sin no more" not "Go and sin some more".

I can no longer claim to be Christian because I do not walk the Faith and refuse to be just another christian.  Either I live His teachings or not.   But what I hold true I will state without hesitation.

You are a good man, Wes.

Hubbard was way ahead of his time - the church that was formed "due to him" is unfortunately a scam.
