Claudine Gay faced backlash over the university’s response to antisemitism on campus, which led to increased scrutiny of her academic record.

Harvard’s president, Claudine Gay, announced her resignation on Tuesday, after her presidency had become engulfed in crisis over accusations of plagiarism and what some called her insufficient response to antisemitism on campus after the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on Oct. 7.

My thoughts go many directions on all this but here are some questions (putting aside the plagiarism topic, that’s a whole different ball game and pretty clear-cut grounds for dismissal.)

Do universities need to state a formal position on foreign affairs (or domestic ones)? For example, was it horrible for Harvard to not more forcefully and formally state, “we deplore the Hamas atrocities”?  Not sure. Do we really need our universities to do that?

Should universities prohibit their students from protesting (if not violent). Should the President of Harvard have squashed pro-Palestinian protests? Not sure. Despite the fact that alumni and donors may be upset.

Now if Jewish students feel unsafe and unprotected on campus, that’s a different matter. The University clearly does have an obligation to make sure all students are safe.

This has been a huge story in America for months.  About two months ago there were some large pro-Palestine rallies on the campus of Harvard.

There were congressional hearings with the heads of three major Universities including MIT, Harvard, and University of Pennsylvania.

Elizabeth Magill stepped down as president of the University of Pennsylvania as well.

It seems like a bit of a witch hunt.
