No joke, I experienced my first earthquake when I was in Tokyo last May.

It was early morning. I had only arrived and gotten to the airport a few hours before.  I was dead asleep.  At first I thought the bed was collapsing.  I sat up and watched my unpacked luggage roll across the room.  Then I got a text/notice on my phone about the earthquake.  Apparently it was a mild one.   :-[

I was living in Long Beach at the time of the Northridge quake in 1994.  It was 38 miles away, but the shaking woke me up immediately and continued for some time.

Mother Earth will have her way anytime she wants.

I was on holiday in a villa sat on a wooden bench outside playing a board game with my nephew. I thought he was shaking the bench to mess up the pieces so I gave him a slap round the back of head. Next thing I see is everyone running out the building shouting earthquake.

This was some 25 years ago and it basically made up my mind to never live in an earthquake zone. Some old dead tree fell down meters from me. Pretty violent and scary shit.

Earthquake is something I don’t think I could handle. We had one in mass a year or two ago and i felt it barely. Couldn’t explain what I felt but it freaked me out and i thought it was inner ear then found out later that day on the news we had an earthquake and it was like 30-40 miles a way and i felt it for a second. I couldn’t imagine feeling a real one. That would freak me the fuck out. You crazy bastards living in California are absolutely insane.

For those who have not really been in an earthquake, 4.2 earthquakes are really small -

Once you hit the 5+ ones, things start to shake a little out here in Los Angeles

The 1994 Northridge earthquake, on January 17, was a 6.7.  We were three miles from the epicenter - that one toppled our refrigerator down.   That earthquake was not a rumbler (which rolls), but a sharp movement, in which everything moved 10 inches on one way (hence the fridge going down).

Man I have to tell you - the earth shaking and splitting open would scare the fck out of me. I’ve been through Katrina and one of the worst flood in U.S. history which were horrible, but at least we had a plan. My family and I have almost a compound with a private neighborhood built on very high ground and multiple built in and portable generators along with fortified shelter with food and deep freezers full of meat, poultry, fish. NONE of that would make a fckn lick of difference if the freaking Earth shook, split open and gobbled it all up!!! 😳😬. I know the weather in Cali is awesome 90% of the time, but the quakes, fires, and INSANE government are enough to keep my ass fending off gators snd moccasins when the god forsaken swamp rises around me!! lol 😆

I haven't been an earthquake but one day it got really windy when I was showing my sister's kid how to make rock candy so I poured the sugar solution on his head. Another time it rained for 3 days in a row so I sold one of his kidneys to a Columbian organ broker.

For me, it was akin to laying on a waterbed and someone else moving on the bed.  It was more "sway" than "bounce".

One thing that really puzzled me was as soon as I started feeling the earthquake and realized what it was, my phone got the text message and started beeping.  Here is why it is puzzling :

1- I had only arrived in the country a few prior and just got to the hotel.
2- I had not supplied my phone number for any contact in the country.  Not the hotel, airline, etc... I used the customer service number for the travel group I work for.
3-  My phone was on silent mode.

I guess they found a way to override that.

With the phone I’m sure it’s the built in gps location, same way they do amber alerts no matter what state you’re in.

Barely felt the 4.2 the other day but noticed the screen on my desk moving around.  The videos from the recent Japanese quake are crazy, the way the houses bend and flex.
