The combination you are on is good for the treatment of Bipolar Disorder Type 1 and 2.
Here's why:
Lamotrigine/Lamictal is an anticonvulsant medication that has been shown to have excellent mood stabilizing properties that should theoretically keep you more towards your baseline versus in a manic, hypomanic or depressive state. Think of your Bipolar Disorder as a spectrum for your mood, whereby you can be in any of the following states at any given time:
Manic
Hypomanic
Baseline/Normal
Depressed
Lamictal works towards keeping you more towards that baseline/normal state. It is approved for Bipolar Disorder Type 1 maintenance to keep you in that baseline state and has additional benefits towards depression. That said, the more therapeutic range begins from 100mg - 200mg per day. So, if you're not there yet, be patient as it can take some time and they can not speed through the dosing as it can (rarely) lead to a serious condition called Steven Johnson Syndrome.
The Quetiapine/Seroquel is an antipsychotic medication. There is both the short acting formulation (known as "IR" immediate release) and long acting formulation (known as "XR" extended release). This medication is approved for all forms of Bipolar Disorder (Mania, Bipolar Depression and Maintenance). I like that they are giving you a daily dose of Lamictal coupled with a nightly dose of Quetiapine, as a lack of sleep can precipitate manic and hypomanic episodes, so you must work on getting good control of your sleep habits. Both of these agents (Lamictal and Quetiapine) make up a great daily regimen for the treatment of your Bipolar Disorder. They work adjunctively to improve the primary condition.
Don't skip your doses. Stay firm on your daily stress relieving habits. Listen to George Michael. All of the aforementioned are great ways to stay in control.
