Did Bo Jackson really run a 4.12 40-yard dash?

https://www.sportskeeda.com/nfl/did-bo-jackson-really-run-4-12-40-yard-dash-revisiting-nfl-great-s-historic-feat

Jackson remembered that it was an electronically-timed 4.13 during what would or could be seen as a local combine or expanded pro day that Auburn hosted. Per the legendary NFL star, many prospects from several colleges were in attendance.

He said that it happened in the indoor bubble at Auburn. There was electronic tape at the starting line that started the clock, and there was a laser at the end line of the 40-yard dash.

Hard to believe that some 35 years ago we had Jose Canseco and Bo Jackson with a combination of both speed and strength never before seen.....   Even Reggie Jackson couldn't believe Jose's power!  day in the day out he'd be front row watching Jose putting balls out of the park show on batting practice. Jose even ran faster than Henderson at that time  ......  fast forward 35 years and I highly doubt Reggie Jackson can say a good thing about Canseco. lol

Same could be said about BO JAckson in same season played  at MLB and NF all star games ,

Sad it didn't last long ...they didn't have the coaching athletes have now.... no where near ......

We now have Ohtany ....but its been 35 years since .

Bo was a complete freak of nature. His injury could only happen to someone with his FREAKISH strength.

It’s really a shame that he got injured. Had he not I believe he would have many records in both the NFL and MLB. The dude is a pretty damn good archer now.

John Ross was a mediocre receiver in the NFL.

He was drafted one spot ahead of Patrick Mahomes, so if you think about it he’s probably the best receiver of all time.

I worked with John in 2017 when he broke that record and was at that combine. it was the last one I went too (I've been to 6). 4.21 is just flat out fast and he beat John by 1/100 of a sec (4.22). People for get that John went in with a strained hamstring and still ran the 4.22 but paid for it at the end of his run by injuring even more. I contend that if John hammy was healthy he would have ran at least a 4.18-19...4.20 at worst

Nah.
It would be akin to the strongest IFBB bodybuilder getting the #2 heaviest bench press in the world.

No way can a person do that who isn't specialized in that specific area of athletic performance. The central nervous system can't handle being that good at that many things. It's all a trade-off.

Even within strength, it's a trade-off. The strongest powerlifters are never as strong at bench press as bench press specialists, for example.

Granted, what Bo Jackson did was amazing. But the FASTEST 40-yard dash time ever is 4.11s by Christian Coleman. And he is a 60m sprint specialist / world record holder.

And Usain Bolt did the 40 in 4.22s.

The only person I could see getting 4.12s other than Christian Coleman would be Getbig's own JustPlaneJane.

Something I think folks are often unaware of is that the 40-yard times like the football players do in combines and "Pro Days" exclude reaction time, while the times for track races like 100 meters include it.  This is a big difference in a 40 since it's at least 0.10 seconds.  Anything under that is a "false start" in track sprints.

Splits for track races are always in intervals of meters so it's hard to be sure, but if you assume constant speed over the 10-meter intervals, Bolt ran the first 40 yards of his 100-meter world record (9.58 seconds) in 4.20 seconds, excluding reaction time.  Including reaction time, he ran it in 4.34 seconds.

Bolt wasn't particularly fast out of the blocks (by the standards of world-class sprinters) with how big he was, he won because his top speed and ability to hold that speed were so far beyond everyone else (although he was a remarkably good starter for his size [nh]).  I would bet the smaller guys have gone sub-4.20 for the first 40 yards.

I would be surprised if a non-sprinter who reportedly weighed 230 lbs ran a legit 4.12 (Bolt I think was 210 or so), but Bo was a freak, who knows.

Bo Jackson was the most overrated athlete ever to be talked about. His whole career was should have, could have, would have, but didn’t. He’s neither a hall of fame in either sport

He was all marketing and hype the people ate it all up. He never lived up to anything in neither sports, it’s all talk about what could have been.

He’s a collegiate Hall of Famer who ran the fastest unofficially non documented 40 yard dash.

Also Bo once called a time out in the batters box, that wasn’t recognized, and promptly hit a home run. That’s fact. Not hype. And it looks like there was 45 people who witnessed this live!
