The IOC was embarrassed by it and the doping scandals, and it doesn't do well in the TV ratings. They cut the number of athletes that could compete to 120 across all classes and that's what the IWF agreed to, for reference, Rio 2016 was more than double that.

I wouldn't be surprised if Weightlifting is gone by the 2030's.

Use to be 9 weight categories. Athletes in between these huge new gaps are fucked. I remember years ago when they changed the weight categories because they didn't want the drug records to stand. They essentially wiped clean all the records. Weight lifting will never be gone.  It's a respected all over the world except the US.

I always thought they could speed up the meet by eliminating the snatch.  It's rare that lifter will win the snatch but loses the overall total. If they got rid of the snatch the whole men's meet could be over in under three hours.

The Olympics itself is dying as no one really cares about the Games except the athletes families and the ruling org whose members get to live it up at the venues and massage their egos.

I pity any country that wants the Games.  Complete stupidity.  Spend billions and then end up with useless stadiums and infrastructure that goes to shit.

Since when does France raise anything but their arms in surrender after dropping their weapon?  And probably their pants.   The WWII Generation were tough folk but now?  Only the Germans have surrendered more of their DNA to the enemies of Freedom and People of Non-Color.   ;D

With the increased popularity of crossfit, olympic weightlifting got thousands of new athletes. It was a dying sport, but not anymore.
