This is an idiotic thread.

There is no such thing as a “best songwriter”.

If you like a song, it’s a well-written song. Period.

I mean, what if a person actively dislikes the songs of a celebrated songwriter like Gordon Lightfoot? Is he a good songwriter to that guy?

P.S. The new trend to praise Prince as the best at everything is absolutely cringeworthy.

Prince was a thing for my generation. His success predominantly is the result of perhaps four songs off one or two albums.

First it was him performing a good guitar solo on a bandwagon YouTube video, from which every know-nothing yelps, He’s the greatest guitarist ever!

Now it’s spilled over to include him as the best EVERYTHING of all time.

I don't think you can name just one... several are tied for number one hits like Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson,

I like Gordon but I think Neil Diamond wrote more hits and bigger hits.

Bee Gees seemed like they could write a hit at the drop of a hat.

McCartney/Lennon has to be mentioned in any songwriting discussion.

Brian Wilson, Springsteen, Paul Simon etc... so many great writers.

I recall watching a documentary on them years ago and the number of hit songs they'd written and produced for other artists was impressive.
